Read More	Simon "Jake" Jacob Nissen Juhl Funeral services for Simon Jacob "Jake" Nissen Juhl will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Waverly, with burial in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Waverly. Juhl, 91, of Waverly, died Monday evening, Sept. 27, 1999, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo from natural causes. Simon Juhl was born March 22, 1908, north of Plainfield, the son of Nis and Christina Juhl. He attended country school near his home, and then attended Plainfield High School. His mother died when he was 12 years old, and at the age of 15, Juhl went out on his own. He worked at various jobs on farms, filling stations, and the Plainfield Feed Mill until 1929 when he went to work for the John Deere Co., in Waterloo, earning 35 cents a day. Because of the depression, this job did not last long, and he was again back to working odd jobs. On Jan. 14, 1935, he was united in marriage to Mary Frances Steele at St.Michael's Church in Nashua. In 1939 the couple began farming and in 1941 bought their first farm in Lafayette Township. In 1955 they moved to a larger farm in Jefferson Township, where they continued farming until 1962. With the children all grown and on their own, the couple moved again to a small farm, maintaining a partnership with their son, Richard (R.J.). Juhl also worked for the Waverly Shell Rock Schools as custodian. In 1964 the Juhl family presented a Yorkshire boar to President Lyndon Johnson at his ranch in Texas, and then were guests of the Johnsons for the day. The couple spent their retirement years in Waverly. Juhl was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Waverly. He was a former member of the Spring Lake School Board, the Bremer County Extension Committee, and was an Agriculture Stabilization Conservation Service County Committeeman. Juhl was a member of the Waverly-Shell Rock School Board when the new high school was built. After leaving the board he received national recognition for his contribution to education. Juhl is survived by one daughter and her husband, Ruth and Gene Modlin of Thompson Falls, MT; two sons, Donald Juhl of Waverly, Fr. Dennis Juhl of Waterloo, and daughter-in law, Mary Jane Juhl of Mechanicsville, 15 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary Frances; one son, R.J., in July of 1998, one great-granddaughter, Katrina; six brothers, Anker, Johannas, Christian, Marius, Anton, and Richard, and one sister, Anna Juhl. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, where there will be a 6 p.m. Rosary Service and a 7:30 p.m. Scripture Service on Thursday. Memorials may be directed to St. Mary's Church for the Ministry of the Home Bound and Elderly.
