Description	:	Jake Smolek, bachelor farmer living west of Winnetoon, was found dead at his home, Saturday evening by neighbors, who investigated when no footprints were seen in the snow following Friday's storm. Death apparently was the result of a heart ailment. He was in bed, nearly dressed. A cut on his nose and a bruised check caused County Attorney Merritt C. Warren to investigate the death, but there was no evidence indicating foul play. The cut and bruise probably resulted in a fall, when he suffered the attack, after which he was able to reach his bed. The body was taken to Verdigre. ...The Creighton News 26 Nov 1953 ******** Jake Smolek was born in Knox county, about four miles south of Verdigre, July 14, 1886 and passed away at his farm home six miles south of Verdigre, Nov. 16 at the age of 67 years. He remained at the home of his parents until the age of 21, when he started to farm for himself on a place about three miles south of Verdigre. He remained there 14 years. He, then, purchased a farm 11 miles southwest of Verdigre, where he farmed for four years, later buying the farm six miles south of Verdigre, where he farmed for 23 years. The last five years, he was not active in farm work. His father preceded him in death in 1912, his mother in 1917. Also preceding him in death were two brothers, Frank and Edward and one sister, Anna Vokner. He is survived by two brothers John and Tom of Verdigre; three sisters, Mary Joch of Chicago, Ill., Katie Haineraich and Emma Jelen of Verdigre. Funeral services were held a the Verdigre ZCBJ Hall, November 22 at 2 p.m. The Rev H.F. Beebe, pastor of the Methodist Church, gave the sermon in English and Marie Tikalsky spoke in the Czech language.
