Cremation has taken place and graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Oct. 3, at Forest Lawn Cemetery north of Morrill with Pastor Rick Reisig officiating. The Nebraska Army National Guard will provide military rites. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the family to be used for a memorial in Jake's name and can be mailed to the family at 626 2nd Avenue, Morrill. Jake was born Sept. 20, 1929, near Stegall to Jake and Freda (Kanzler) Weinmaster. He was raised on the farm during the Great Depression with his siblings in the Morrill-Mitchell area, attending school at South Morrill and Sunflower until it was necessary to quit school to work on the family farm. During his time growing up, Jake also worked in the potato cellars, operated a horse driven thrasher, and performed various odd jobs with his good friend Don Fertig. In 1949, Jake enlisted in the US Army receiving basic training in Grand Island NE and then serving in the Korean War. During this time, Jake moved up in rank to Sergeant 1st Class, serving the remainder of the war in Japan. Words cannot describe the tremendous honor Jake felt in serving in the military or of the friends he made during that time. After his return to the Morrill area, Jake married Janet Shirlene Strauch on June 13, 1954. Together, Jake and Janet raised three children, Kenneth, Karen, and Michael while farming in the Gothenburg, Morrill and Henry areas. During his time farming, Jake earned several Holly and Great Western Sugar awards for top station and top ten sugar beet production, and over the years, many people commented on how clean he kept his farmstead. In 1985 Jake and Janet moved to Morrill where he worked for Simplot Soil, the American Legion and various other jobs until his retirement in the mid 90s. Jake was a lifetime member of the Morrill American Legion and St. Paul's Church in Mitchell, where he served over 20 years at every level on the church council. During his later years, Jake could often be spotted driving the country roads around Morrill watching the local farmers throughout the growing season or visiting with friends at the local café and lumber yard. Jake was a hard working and dedicated man, leaving a lasting impression on those he touched and will be sadly missed by his family & friends. Survivors include his sons, Kenneth and Michael (Karlena) of Morrill; daughter, Karen (Tom) Howe of Fresno, Calif.; grandchildren, Wyndee (Nick) Green of Lyman and Kacey and Cody Howe of Fresno; great-grandchildren, Rylee and Ryder Green of Lyman; brother, Rex Weinmaster; sisters, Barbara Steffensen, Sheron Dinnel, Esther Weinmaster, Helen Kuhlman, Mildred Schledewitz, Delores Sell and Elsie Mason. Preceding Jake in death was his wife, Janet; infant son, Mark; parents; brothers, Delbert, Elmer, Carl and Henry; sister, Martha Kuhlman; and special friend Don Fertig.
