Description	:	Husband of Nancy Ann Pearce Tompkins. James Tompkins was born Nov. 16, 1808, in Camden County, Georgia and was the third son of Donald Tompkins and Frances King Tompkins. James Tompkins was born Nov. 16, 1808, in Camden County, Georgia and was the third son of Donald Tompkins and Frances King Tompkins. He was the grandson of John and Elizabeth McKay Tompkins. In Approximately 1835, the Tompkins family moved from the Camden County, Georgia area to Nassau County, Florida. They settled around the King's Ferry, and established the Florida branch of the family there. Later that year, James and his two brothers, William and John, moved to different parts of Florida. John moved into the Sumter County area, and William moved to Gadsden County, and later, to Columbia County. James settled in Alachua County where he reared his family. In Alachua County, James Tompkins grew citrus, and was one of the first, if noth the first, to ship citrus fruit from that area of Florida to other places. He was a member of the Methodist faith. Contributed by: Weston Taylor of Tallahassee, Florida. TOMPKINS REUNION INFO BY WESTON TAYLOR: People from as far away as Missouri and Virginia came to the Reunion. Mr. Howard Tompkins and his wife Evelyn were from Virginia, and a daughter of Alfred D. Tompkins of Lake City was from Missouri. I'm sorry that I did not get this lady's name, and apologies are extended to her. If someone will send me her name, I'll be glad to publish it in the next newsletter. During the Indian Wars the family moved from Georgia to Lochloosa Lake in Alachua County. The children recall playing with the Indians while living at the Lake. Some if not all of James and Nancy's children were born at their old plantation home nearby beautiful Lake Lochloosa and Cross Creek of Marjorie Kinnon Rawlings fame. It is remarkable that nearly every one of them and their families are buried at this same place beneath it's century-old live oak trees. Read about Alford D. Tompkins in "Back Home" a history of Citrus County. The book is in the Inverness Library. It tells about "Alf" when he owned Tompkinsville, now Inverness. From it we learn also that he was born in Nassau County, Florida. The largest group in attendance was the John Tompkins Branch 1807-1868. The other branches were well represented also. Mrs. Henrietta T. Snyder was the oldest (in terms of years, but not in spirit) member of the Family in attendance, and a grandson of Paul Tompkins (4 mos.) was the youngest. James was a brother to my 3rd. Great Grandfather John Tompkins.
