Carroll, in many respects Gaffney’s first citizen, died shortly after 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon in the City Hospital. He had been ill several weeks. His condition was considered satisfactory until about 2 o’clock Friday afternoon when double pneumonia developed and he sank into unconsciousness from which he never rallied. Mr. Carroll was 75 years old. He had been a resident of Gaffney about 57 years, during which time he exerted strong influence upon the commercial and industrial development of the city. He was president of Limestone Mills, vice president of the First National Bank, director of several mills and banks, president of Carroll & Byers Company, Carroll Cotton Company, the One Price Cash Store, Carroll Grocery Company, and the Gaffney Brick and Tile Company. He owned stock in numerous other local enterprises. Mr. Carroll was a patron of Limestone College, having made the institution gifts totalling around a quarter of a million dollars in value. One of the gifts was a fine arts building erected in 1923 at a cost of over $50,000. He maintained a scholarship at Furman University for Cherokee county boys, and for more than 30 years he had been a regular contributor to the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary at Louisville. He was a member of the Providence Baptist church, serving as chairman of the board of deacons for half a century. A few years ago Mr Carroll was voted an honorary life membership in the Rotary Club. Born May 9, 1854, in the Antioch community of this county, Mr. Carroll came to Gaffney as a clerk in a store operated by I. Hardin. While a boy he had worked on his father's farm, in a tan yard, shoe shop, and at other jobs. His business genius asserted itself shortly after he came to Gaffney, and it was not long until he was one of the then village’s leading citizens. He took an active interest in practically every development that occurred during his long career. For years his cotton company was one of the largest spot buyers in the South, having representatives at the principal markets in North and South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama. Although not politically inclined, he served several terms as mayor of Gaffney in the eighties. He had been a member of the Limestone College board of trustees since 1882. Mr. Carroll was active in promoting the establishment of the Gaffney Manufacturing Company here, and sereral years later when the Limestone Mills were formed he was made president of this important link in the Hamrick group. He was also instrumental in the organization of the Cherokee Falls Manufacturing Company, of which he was president for more than 10 years. In 1880 Mr. Carroll and the late P. G. Stacy formed a partnership for a banking business under the name of Carroll & Stacy. Sixteen years later this business was converted into the National Bank, now the First National Bank, and Mr. Carroll was made vice president, a position he held until his death. He was one of the officers and principal stockholders in the old Limestone Lime Company, which for 20 years operated a successful quarying business at Limestone. Mr. Carroll married Miss Mary Humphries, a daughter of Thomson Humphries, widely-known singing master, in 1872, the year he came to Gaffney. He was in business with his father-in-law for a short time, but a disagreement arose over business policies and the partnership was dissolved. Later the firm of Carroll & Carpenter was organized, this being the beginning of the more recent Carroll & Byers Company, general merchants. Mrs. Carroll died about four years ago. Two daughters survive, these being Mrs. Arch C. Cree, of this city, wife of Dr. A. C. Cree, executive secretary of the Georgia Baptist convention, and Mrs. G. G. Byers.
