SPEER Among the successful farmers of Bangor township, Marshall county, the name of James A. Speer should not be omitted, for he has evidently directed his efforts in a right channel, judging from the thrifty and well kept appearance of his place. He comes to us from the old Tar state and he has many of the winning characteristics of the people of the South, his birth having occurred in North Carolina, October 28, 1857. He is the son of Aquila and Caroline (Reece) Speer, both natives of North Carolina, the father born on September 12, 1821. After the mother's death, Mr. Speer married Mary Morgan, and they came to Hardin county, Iowa, in 1868, and to Marshall county, Iowa, in 1869, and in 1882 located on the farm owned by James A., of this review, and lived here for ten years. In 1892 they bought the farm of two hundred acres in Bangor township, and here the father's death occurred on August 12, 1897; his widow still survives. He was a man whom everybody highly respected, for he led an industrious, honest life and did a good citizen's duty in supporting the things in his community that made for its progress. Three children were born to his first union, of whom two sons are living. Politically, he was a Democrat and he was of Baptist belief. James A. Speer was reared on the home farm, where he began working when a lad, attending the common schools in the winter time in North Carolina, also went to school in Hardin and Grundy counties, Iowa. He took up farming for a livelihood and by close attention to his work and exceptionally good management he has been rewarded with a large measure of success, being now the owner of a finely improved and rich farm of two hundred and sixty acres in Bangor township, which is, in fact, one of the model farms of the township. He has a very pleasant home and good outbuildings, and excellent herds of live stock may always be seen about his place. In politics, Mr. Speer is a Prohibitionist and he and his wife are members of the Christian church at Union. On July 12, 1905, Mr. Speer was married to Martha Davis, who was born in north Carolina on May 9, 1879. She is the daughter of Jesse and Sarah (Hutchens) Davis, both natives of north Carolina. The father is deceased, but the mother survives. Ten children were born to them, all of whom are living. Two children have been to Mr. and Mrs. Speer, namely: Errol Hadley, born July 24, 1906, and Caroline, born February 12, 1909. Info provided by Robert Fahey.
