Marion Register March 15, 1905 James Alfred Dennis was born in Mercer county, Ill. June 4, 1837, and died in Independence, Iowa, March 8, 1905, lacking but a few months of being 68 years of age. Marion Register March 15, 1905 James Alfred Dennis was born in Mercer county, Ill. June 4, 1837, and died in Independence, Iowa, March 8, 1905, lacking but a few months of being 68 years of age. He was married to Axa M. Hahn in Springfield, Ill., August 23, 1865. To them were born ten children five sons and five daughters, six of whom are deceased, four daughters and two sons and the wife who died the 28th of November, 1885. Of those living, Olive E., Edith Crane, and George E., live in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Wesley E., in Marion, Iowa. Shortly after the close of the war Mr. Dennis moved from Illinois to Solon, Iowa, where he resided until he came to Marion, which was about six years ago, when he married Mrs. Ruth A. West, who carefully looked after his comfort during the very long sickness, up to the time of his going to the hospital for treatment, and who is deeply moved because of his sudden departure. When the war broke out in '61, he soon enlisted, and served his country until the close of the war in the Fifth Iowa cavalry, Co. D., when he was honorably discharged. The deceased was not a member of any church, but spoke always most favorably of religious things and regretted that his many physical ills prevented his attendance upon the church services. The funeral was conducted by Rev. T.M. Evans at the recent home of the deceased, on First avenue at 10 a.m. Saturday. Interment in Oak Shade cemetery.
