Two days later Vicksburg surrendered. As death and discharges took their toll, the regiment was in need of more volunteers. On January 19, 1865, James McLane and his brother-in-law Luther Pugh enlisted as new recruits and on February 23, 1865, they reached the regiment then camped on Dauphin Island at the mouth of Mobile Bay as it prepared for its final campaign of the war. In cold weather and drenching rains that turned roads to mud, they marched north along the east side of the bay and on April 12th entered Mobile as the city was surrendered by the Confederates. They camped at Spring Hill before returning to New Orleans and then seeing service in Arkansas before going to Baton Rouge. On July 12, 1865, with time still to serve on their one-year enlistments, James McLane and Luther Pugh were among 110 "recruits" who were transferred to a 34th/38th consolidated regiment while three days later the remaining members of the regiment were mustered out of service. The government soon realized further service of the recruits was not needed and they were mustered out at Houston, Texas, on August 15, 1865. James and Mary had seven children, four of whom died in infancy. In answer to a March 12, 1898, questionnaire, James said their children who were still living were Viola born April 9, 1872, William born December 26, 1877 and James born January 23, 1884.
