Burke, a pioneer of 1852, and one of Cowlitz County's most useful and successful citizens, died Thursday at the age of 91 years, at his home at Martin's Bluff, where he had resided for 70 years. At his deathbed were his ten surviving children and many grand children. Mr Burke was born near Utica New York. He left Independence, Missouri April 15, 1852 for the "Oregon Country" crossing the plains with Ezra Meeker and arriving in Portland September 20, a short time later coming to Martin's Bluff. In 1853, he engaged in placer mining at Orofino and Burke, Idaho, the later place being named for him. He returned the same year with a moderate fortune in gold, which he invested in land and cattle. This grew into a large fortune. Mr Burke being at the time of his death, Cowlitz Counties wealthiest citizen. Mr Burke survived through the Indian War 1855-56, having been a trusted scout under Captain H J C Maxon, Colonel B T Shaw commanding the regiment. He was prominent in the political affairs of Clarke and Cowlitz counties for 60 years. The funeral was held from the Presbyterian church in Woodland at 1:30 today and internment at the Burke Family home cemetery. _______________________________________________________ James and Abigal had 17 children. They were: Janice "Jennie" Alice, 1859 - 1947, William Henry, 1861 - 1916, Amos Albert, 1862 - 1925, Ida Lenora, 1864 - 1946, Minnie Agnes, 1866 - 1929, Adaline "Addie" Myrtle, 1868 - 1904, Clarence James, 1869 - 1873, Francis "Frank" Edward, 1871 -1956, Eva F., 1872 - 1873, Lulu Emma, 1874 - 1966, Stella Lorena, 1875 - 1927, Grant, 1877 - 1953, Daisy F., 1878 - 1949, Arthur, 1880 - ????, Joseph H., 1881 - 1894, Maud, 1883 - 1883, and Iva M., 1885 - 1976.
