Born at Ringgold, Morgan County, Andrew Murphy took over the responsibility of the family at the age of 13 years when his father, a farmer, died. As a young man he worked in coal mines and at farming and later for about ten years was a traveling salesman for a grocery house in this district. He lived at Trimble for a time, being postmaster of that village and later had a livery stable at Glouster. He also was engaged in the furniture business for some time. In 1902 he came to Athens to become sheriff of Athens County, having been elected in November of the preceding year on the Republican ticket. For many years he had been one of the leaders of the Republican Party in the county and widely known. He engaged in business in Athens with his sons, Hal and Dal, for several years after retiring from the office of sheriff after four years of service. In 1921 he was appointed to the Board of County Commissioners serving on that board as its president for about six years, being elected twice in that period. He gave his time freely to this work, being in the office almost every day for six years. He leaves a widow and two sons, Hal and Dal, of Athens. One son, Fred, died several years ago and another son, Jesse, died in his childhood. The eldest of a family of children, Mr. Murphy was the last to die.
