From The Champion Genealogy, by Francis Bacon Trowbridge, 1891, pages 149-151: James Arminius Champion, son of John Champion [and Elizabeth Kellum], was born 31 May 1815 in Worcester, N.Y. He was married first, in Cherry Valley, N.Y. on 2 January 1836 to Harriet Elizabeth Lake, daughter of Gideon Lake. She was born 21 March 1816 in Worcester, N.Y. and died 22 October 1850 in East Worcester, N.Y. He was married second in Cooperstown, N.Y. on 1 January 1850 [1851?] to her sister Olive Desire Lake. She was born 3 March 1814 in Worcester and died 18 June 1882 in Waubeek, Iowa. He married third, in Iowa City, Iowa, on 4 March 1889 to Emma Allen of that place. James Arminius Champion when he came into possession of the old mill put in a clover-mill, but it soon took fire and burned to the ground. He then built the present woolen factory, and also erected a dwelling on the knoll opposite. His eldest son was drowned in the mill-race, and he himself was severely injured in the machinery of his factory. In 1861 he sold the factory to his brother Ezra, and removed with his family to Cedar Rapids, Iowa; but after remaining there two years he moved to Waubeek, Linn County, where he was engaged in farming until 1882. On February 22d of that year his wife fell and broke her knee. It was eighteen hours before a physician could reach her, and during that time she bore her suffering with remarkable fortitude. Mr. Champion rented out his farm, and her daughters returned home and devoted their whole time to nursing her; but the shock occasioned by the fall, combined with a previous delicate state of health, caused her death in four months. Throughout her long illness her manner was that of a resigned and Christian woman. After his wife's death Mr. Champion went to live with his son James in Iowa City, and at present resides on a farm one and a half miles east of that place. Children by the first marriage, born in East Worcester, N.Y.: (1) Delia Ann, b. 8 Apr 1840; m. William A. Taylor. (2) Elizabeth, b. 29 Jan 1842; d. 28 Dec 1849. (3) Reuben, b. 28 Jan. 1844; was drowned 25 Feb. 1847. (4) Ezra, b. 3 Apr. 1846 ... died 4 June 1889 at Davenport, Iowa. (5) Edwin, b. 22 July 1850; d. aged 9 months. Children by the second marriage, born in East Worcester: (6) Simon Bolivar, b. 26 Dec. 1851; m. Electa Willmott. (7) Harriet Elizabeth, b. 16 Aor, 1853; m. James J. Penley. (8) Agness Ophelia, b. 17 May 1854; is unmarried and resides in Davenport, Iowa. (9) James Arminius, b. 25 Sept. 1856; m. Addie Winnegarr. [there was also a son, Edwin Allen, of his third marriage]
