His memorial service will be 11:00 AM Monday, July 9 at First Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls. Memorial visitation starts at 6:00 PM Sunday, July 8 at George Boom Funeral Home & Crematory, Sioux Falls, where the family will greet friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Private burial will be at a later date at North Preston Lutheran Cemetery, Lake Preston SD. James Arthur “Jim” Arshem, son of Arthur J. and Erma L. (Taute) Arshem, was born July 16, 1940 in Sioux Falls SD. Jim grew up and was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church and graduated from Washington High School where he was active in Junior Red Cross, Boys State, National Honor Society, Drama, and Debate as a few of his interests. He was looking forward to his 60th Class Reunion in Sioux Falls this month. Jim grew up in a close family with grandparents and aunts and uncles and cousins always close around both at the lake cabin on Lake Madison in the summer and at home. Family gatherings were important to him all year round. Jim graduated from Augustana College in Sioux Falls with his B.A. in Chemistry, the University of Nebraska with his M.S. in Science and the University of Denver where he completed the Graduate School of Librarianship. He worked for several years at the Denver Public Library and received a Fellowship to Washington DC to learn more about United States Patents and Trademarks. Jim was offered a job with the Federal Government in the Patent and Trade Mark Office and accepted that position which he held until retirement. He enjoyed his travels with his ‘dog and pony’ show instructing libraries all over the world how to set up and use the Patent and Trade Mark Offices in Washington DC from their own libraries. He enjoyed all the people he met along the way and all of his library friends and contacts and continued attending as many conferences as he could. Jim was a very social person when it came to attending concerts, Smithsonian events, Kennedy Center Events, Organ Concerts, plays, discussion groups, movies, lectures, out to dinner or whatever he was able to attend. He would much rather be out and around people than be home washing dishes or clothes. Jim enjoyed the Washington DC events available and was always ready to be a tour guide for family and friends coming to town. He had several cameras and took many pictures of his work and travel. He loved family and home and was faithful in calling his parents and sister regularly every week. Grateful for having shared his life are his sister, Joyce L. Helberg and her husband, Don, Sioux Falls SD; his nephew, Mark Helberg and his wife, Marnie, Vancouver, BC, Canada; two great-nieces, T’naya Ramirez, Lynnwood WA, Mya Baca, Wellington, New Zealand; two great-great-nieces, Bailey and Aria Rameriz, Lynnwood WA; and many other relatives and friends. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Art Arshem, on December 25, 2004 and Erma Arshem, on October 14, 2007; and his niece, Jeannie Baca, on June 10, 2008.
