James Arville Dunagan was born in Bardstown, Nelson Co., Kentucky, July 1, 1824 and died at the home of his daughter Mrs. George Keeling near Avon, Iowa July 12, 1917 at the advanced age of 93 years and 11 days. As a lad he moved with his parents to Mooreville, Indiana, where he grew to manhood. The family was among the early settlers of this part of the state and he bore unusual hardships and privation of Pioneer life. Capt. Dunagan was a pioneer of two states, first of Indiana and later of Iowa. In the early 1850's there was a great exodus of eastern people to the new Hawkeye state. The famous three river country was being exploited as the garden of the Mississippi Valley. Young Dunagan became greatly interested in this Eldorado, then considered a part of the great west. He decided to emigrate to the new land of promise and in 1856 he turned his face toward the setting sun. He landed at the town of Hartford, Iowa. Hartford at this point of it's history, was one of the most flourishing business and manufacturing centers in this part of the state. It was located near the famous Parmalee mill on Middle River where a few years before John D. Parmalee, the pioneer of the Three River country built the first sawmill in central Iowa and sawed the lumber for the barracks of old Fort Des Moines and which a few years later was converted into a grist mill - a mill that became the most widely known and largely patronized in a radius of more than 50 miles. Arville Dunagan by which he was generally known, engaged in the sawmill and lumber business in which he continued to success until the beginning of the Civil War. April 27, 1858 in the little old Baptist Church at Hartford, he was united in marriage with Margaret Jane Duncan, also recently from Indiana and this tie was not severed until her death Dec. 27, 1916 nearly sixty years later. Upon the breaking out of the rebellion, nearly every man of military age responded to the call to the colors. Company B of the Thirty Fourth Iowa Infantry was recruited largely from Hartford and vicinity. Arville Dunagan was among the first to enlist, and on Aug. 4, 1862, he was appointed second lieutenant of his company and was mustered into the service of his country the following Oct. 15th and on Feb. 1, 1863 was promoted to Captain and served during the war. His war record is without blemish and members of his company speak of his gallantry and of his interest in the welfare of his men. To Capt. and Mrs. Dunagan were born 6 children, all of whom reside in or near Des Moines. They are Marshall, Paris, Mrs. Magenta Keeling, Clarence, Delmer and Fred. He is survived by a brother Felix Dunagan who also is a veteran of the Civil War and a member of the Soldier's Home at Marshalltown, and who because of illness was unable to attend the funeral. The funeral was held at the home of his daughter Mrs. George Keeling, Sunday the 15th and presided by the Rev. Frank Mutchler of East Des Moines. The address was one of the most touching, patriotic and able funeral discourses your correspondent ever heard. In it he dwelt on the rugged personality and strong mentality of the deceased, on his patriotism, as exemplified in his life; on his love of country and the flag, and how on a recent occasion, he made the speeches to tell the boys to stand by the flag and never to permit it to be dishonored. The remains were taken to Hartford and interred by the side of his companion of nearly three score years, whose passing occurred but a few months before. GAR marker
