Read More	Born April 13, 1806, in Boston; died March 10, 1887, in Lawrence, Mass., and buried in Andover, Mass.; married February 27, 1838, Dorothy Wentworth Harvey. Mr. Treat’s father died when he was hardly two weeks old, leaving his widowed mother with ten young children dependent on her efforts. After a few years the family moved to Waltham, Mass. Mr. Treat learned the machinist trade. He proved to be a very skillful and faithful mechanic and was rapidly promoted. When quite young he took contracts for building machinery. He invented machines which enabled him to accomplish almost as much in an hour as could be done in a day by the old methods. This rendered his contract very valuable and profitable to him. He built the first six spinning and eighteen filling frames that were put in operation in Lowell. In the meantime, he was studying for Harvard college, which he entered in 1828. During vacations he worked at his trade, and taught in the factory school at Waltham, where Hon. N. P. Banks was one of his scholars. He also lectured before the Rumford Institute of that town. The late Rev. Dr. Edson, Rector of St. Ann’s Church, Lowell, assisted him in his studies in 1826, and always refused any renumeration for his services. After graduating in 1832, he went to Lowell, and held the position of paymaster on the Merrimac Corporation for some years. About 1835, he accepted the agency of the Pittsfield Manufacturing Co., Pittsfield, N.H., having also charge of the mill at South Berwick, Me., for a short time. He was a very prominent citizen, interested in everything that pertained to the welfare of the town. In 1850, visited Europe and spent three months in England, France, and Italy. Was one of the organizers of the Pittsfield Savings Bank, April 13, 1855. When on a visit to the town in 1889, it was very gratifying to hear old and middle-aged persons speak of his unostentatious kindness to the poor, and of the assistance which he was ever ready to give to the deserving. He was a perfect gentleman and treated every man alike. Whether he was poor and humble, or rich and occupying a high station, made no difference to him. He was very agreeable in company, and full of anecdotes and stories. His word was as good as his bond. In 1856, he moved to Andover to educate his children. In 1859, he removed to Lawrence, where he engaged in the sale of iron, steel, dye stuffs, and supplies for cotton and woolen mills, under the firm name of James A. Treat & Co. Held a few public offices. Was alderman in 1863, 1871, 1872; in 1881, was one of a committee to examine designs for a soldiers’ and sailors’ monument to be erected on the common; was one of the organizers of the Broadway Savings Bank, and a vice president for many years; was also one of the organizers of and a director in the Lawrence National Bank. In 1884, ill health compelled him to retire from active business, leaving his partners, who were his son and H.L. Peters, to attend to the active duties.
