Description	:	James Austin Warnock, whose tragic death from an accidental gun shot wound while hunting, came across a rabbit, and on account of it being so close to him, he turned his rifle and struck at it with the butt end. The rifle was loaded and cocked and the jar caused it to go off. The bullet entered his body just below the waist and lodged in his abdomen. He walked to the nearest house, the home of Mrs.Mary Kilcion, which was one half mile from his home. A physician was called from Victor who sent for Dr. J.E. Cox for counsel. As near as could be discovered, the bullet was lodged in the muscles of the abdomen and he was sent to his home the same day.* Obituary James Austin Warnock, whose tragic death from an accidental gun shot wound, has heretofore been chronicled, was born in Benton County, Iowa, March 2, 1870, and died at 5:30a.m., Friday Dec 24, 1897, 27 years and O months of age. On December 22, 1892 he was married to Julia A.Groff of Iowa County, and moved to the farm they have since occupied in Hartford township. Mr. Warnock was baptized on April 5,1806 and was a very acceptable member of the Methodist church. The funeral was held at the church, at Victor, Sunday morning, at 11 o’clock and the remains interred in the I.O.O.F. cemetery.It is a sad bereavement to the families and communities. He leaves a wife and three children, two little girls and a baby boy three months old. His father and mother, two brothers, and three sisters also survive him. All of them whom reside in this vicinity. To them all of our sympathy is extended.* This is a revised version of the original newspapers clippings found in Every Other Day Union of Benton County, Iowa, dated 12-23-1897 and 12-30-1897. Julia Ann Groff Warnock later married Adelbert King on September 28, 1901. Most likely they met because Adelbert’s mother, Frances Benson King’s sister, Mrs. Thompson Rose, lived in Benton County. The associated families of the Groff, Rose, and Wheeler families seemed to gather often as families did in those days of farm life. The happy side of this sad story is that three more daughters were born to the combined family of the Warnock-King union with all the siblings bonding in a very close relationship during their lifetime. *This is dedicated to the descendants of Austin Warnock whose death was related to them as a hunting accident with no additional information. Beatrice (Dasie) Verna Warnock, the oldest daughter of James and Julia Warnock in 1985 wrote this memory about her father. “Remember? Yes, I remember, the house where I was born. A lovely yellow farm house close by an Iowa town. The graveyard on the quiet hill is lovely now and sad, Dasie was there yesterday searching for her Dad.”
