He is survived by his widow, one daughter Mrs. Beryl Fullerton, and seven sons, Lester, Howard, Ralph, Ray, Kenneth, Lawrence and Harold Clinton; one sister Mrs. Mary S. Miles, now at Long Beach, Cal. and six grandchildren. The funeral was held Saturday, Jan. 22, at the Rice church, Rev. Stayt of Kettle Falls officiating. The Odd Fellows lodge of Rice conducted the services at the grave. Interment in Rice cemetery, Quinn W. McCord of Colville in charge. Mr. Clinton was one of the early pioneers of Stevens County. In 1854, Mr. Clinton crossed the plains with his parents, brothers and sisters, they being 8 months on the road. In those days the mode of conveyance was mostly by ox team, which was very slow. The family settled near Jacksonville, Oregon, Mr. Clinton's father furnishing supplies for the government troops during what was known as the Rogue River Indian war. In 1858, the Clinton family left Oregon, and returned to Indiana by the way of the Isthmus of Panama, and New York. In the early 70's, Mr. Clinton moved to Fort Scott, Kansas, where he engaged in the newspaper business for several years. From there he moved to Gainsville, Texas and entered the cattle business. He closed his interests there in the early 80’s and came to the northwest, finally locating at Spokane Falls. In 1881 he started a dairy ranch at old Fort Spokane, which at that time was occupied by troops. In the spring of 1883, he took up a homestead in the Columbia River valley where he has since made his home. He gradually added to his holdings until he had one of the best farms on the Columbia River. He early took up the apple industry and at one time the “Riverscene Fruit farm” was about the best known fruit ranch in the Columbia River valley. Mr. Clinton served one term as county commissioner from his district. One by one the old settlers of the valley are passing to the great beyond, and in a few more years the names of such old pioneers as Clinton, Harvey, Underhill, Ledgerwood, Rice, and others will have passed into history.
