He united in marriage to Mary Ellen Brooks in July 1856. To this union were born 7 children, 3 girls and four boys, of whom 5 survive him. John A. Haley of Clarion, Iowa, Mrs. G.F. Dougherty of Steamboat Rock, Iowa; Edwin F. Haley of Clarion, Iowa; William S. Haley of Waterloo, Iowa; and Mrs. Orville Hoyt of Clarion, Iowa; and two Elbie and Carrie, died in infancy. August 1, 1862 he enlisted in Co. F. 119th infantry and served three years and one month for the freedom of his country. At the close of the war he returned to his home near Camden, Ill. And later moved with his family to Steamboat Rock where he resident until the death of his wife, Mary Ellen, Sept. 17, 1894. After her death he returned to Camden, Ill. And was united in marriage to Mrs. Louise Kinnan, Jan. 14, 1896. Here they resided until his death Aug. 21, 1912 at the age of 75 years, 7 months and 5 days. He was a kind, loving father, a good neighbor and was respected by all who knew him. He was always ready and willing to lend a helping hand. During his latter years he lived a life that feared not death and was ready and willing to go when summoned. He leaves a loving wife, one brother, two sisters, eleven grandchildren and ten great-great grandchildren. He was a member of the G.A.R., also for 30 odd years a member of the Masonic Order, which conducted the rites at the grave in the local cemetery. The remains of the deceased accompanied by relatives arrived here from Illinois Friday evening. The funeral services were held from the Congregational church Sunday, August 25 at 3 p.m. in the presence of a concourse of friends. The singing by a mixed quartet and the sermon by the pastor Rev. H. E. Rosenberger from the text of John 14:6 were comforting and impressive. The body was then laid to its last rest in the beautiful Steamboat Rock cemetery where it awaits the final resurrection and the solemn call to the general judgment.
