The deceased was a good man and one who will be sadly missed by all who knew him. He was widely known and highly esteemed for his many excellent qualities, and his death was sincerely regretted by friends and relatives gnerally. The following biographical sketch will be of interest to those who knew him in life. The deceased, Mr. Baxter, was born Dec. 1, 1837 at Longtown, Cumberland shire, near Carlyle. He immigrated to America in the year of 1869, landing at New York on August 1st. He lived at Kalamazoo, Mich., until the spring of '71 when he, in company with Alex Lamb, James and George Irvine, came to Nebraska, where he settled on a homestead near Oak Creek in April. Mr. Baxter pursued the occupation of farming on his homestead until about six years ago when he retired, moving into Farwell. He was married to Miss Christina Irvine on Dec. 26, 1873 and to this union nine children were born, seven of whom survive him, namely: Mrs. Janet Harvey of Farwell, Mrs. Jane Dodd, of Olds, Alberta, Thomas, James A., Archibald, Albert and Ethel. Also two sisters, living in or near Longtown, England. He was a member of the Presbyterian church its organization here and also a member of the Ancient Order of United Workmen for the past twenty-five years. The funeral servcies were conducted by Rev. Aleridge at 2 p.m. on Tuesday June 18, at the Presbyterian church in the presence of a large number of sorrowing friends and relatives, and the remains were laid to rest in the Van Cott cemetery.
