James "Jim" Beecher Strang was born on Dec. 20, 1936, in Oelwein, the son of Donald G. and Mildred (Parmely) Strang. He was senior class president at Oelwein Senior High School and graduated in 1955. He attended the University of Iowa. Jim, along with his father and two brothers, started Strang Tire Co., a successful and long-standing business in the Oelwein community. Jim was a 32nd degree Mason and member of the Hebron Masonic Lodge No. 374 Ancient Free & Accepted Masons at Oelwein. He also belonged to the El Kahir Shrine, Shriner Tin Lizzies, and Oelwein Rotary Club. Throughout the years he loved boating on the Mississippi River, snow-mobiling and later in life developed a passion for flying. During his retirement in Montana, Jim was active in the Anaconda Snowmobile Club and took special training as a pilot to participate in the Montana Search and Rescue. Jim is survived by his wife, Debra Strang of Anaconda; four children from a previous marriage, Sara Strang-Steinwurtzel (Rob) of Bethesda, Md., Sally Halvorson (Erik) of Fort Wayne, Ind., Mathew Strang of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Elizabeth Strike (Darrin) of Clear Lake, Iowa; two stepchildren, Shane Fettkether of Brooklyn, Iowa, and Angela Chew (Cory) of Murray, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Matthew and Grace Steinwurtzel, Emily and Alex Halvorson, Catherine and McKenna Strike and Jaiden Fettkether; brother, David Strang (Lynn) of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; and sister, Cathie Opperman (Brad) of Sumner, Iowa. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert Strang. Jim will be remembered for his sense of humor, the ability to tell a great story and the love he had for his family. A memorial fund has been established for cancer research and forest preservation. Published in The Montana Standard from 11/8/2007 - 11/14/2007.
