Description	:	Boone County Democrat February 24, 1911 James Birmingham, a former well known miner of this city, met with instant death in Des Moines Saturday afternoon. He was working in the Iowa Coal Company mine near the Portland Cement plant, and in some way fell down the shaft, a distance of 135 feet. The body was badly crushed. The corner was called and the remains were taken to his home in Valley Junction and prepared for burial. The corner was called and the remains were taken to his home in Valley Junction and prepared for burial. Monday the remains were brought to Boone, arriving on the 1:00 o’clock car, and were taken to the Christian church where the funeral services were held, conducted by the Rev. Ritz, burial in Linwood cemetery. He is survived by his wife and one son, also five brother, John, Thomas and Walter Birmingham of this city, Wilson of Des Moines and William, who could not be located, and four sisters, Mrs. Wm. Stockman and Mrs. Ollie Atkinson of Boone and Mrs. John Keating and Mrs. Frank Toberman of Des Moines.
