I only found out about his story because I was discussing with my co-worker about our growing up years, when he told me that his older brother (by 2 years), was shot in a school shooting in Goddard, KS (originally a farming community, but now a working surburb 12 miles west of Wichita) back on 21-Jan-1985. My friend's brother along with two other teachers, and Principal Jim McGee were shot. Unfortunately Principle McGee died a few hours later. (In my naivete I had no idea that there were school shootings prior to Columbine, CO in 1999. Boy, was that is far from the truth. Enoch Brown was the first in Pennsylvania in 1764. Enoch along with 10 children were killed.) I was surprised that I could not find a findagrave memorial for Principle McGee, so I researched a bit to find out what became of him, and then created a memorial as everybody deserves to be remembered. Hopefully, he has a headstone that can be attached to this memorial. Regardless, I hope that one day someone who knew Principle McGee can do justice to this memorial to celebrate his 35 years and 10 months on this earth, and not just focus on his final hours which made the news. He was someone's loving son, husband, and father; and I'm sure the community of Goddard must of also thought a lot of their principle. The sum total of his life is much more than just being the victim of a very disturbed teenager. --------------- Note there are some online news stories that came out around June 2013 that stated a bit more about him... To paraphrase: James Brent McGee a native of Kiowa, Barber County, Kansas was born March 2, 1949 and died as a result of a school shooting January 21, 1985 in Goddard, Kansas. He was the son of John. D. and Minnie S. McGee of Kiowa. His brother, sister, widow, son, and daughter were able to attend a dedication of a memorial to Fallen Educators at the Emporia State University campus in Emporia, Kansas which was held on 12-June-2013. It is the only memorial of this kind in the United States. Note that Principle McGee received his Masters Degree at Emporia. ------------ In addition to the Fallen Teachers memorial in Emporia, Goddard maintains a memorial for him in the back court yard of the school building where this tragedy occurred. At the time it was a middle school, but now serves as a school for 5th and 6th graders.
