He is survived by his widow, who before her marriage was Miss Lura V Colaw and the following children; Mrs W D Wilder of Cortland, NY; Warrren C Hidy, Crabbottom; Mrs W B Simmons, Berkeley Springs, W Va.; James P Hidy, Massena, NY; and Mrs Russell Hinkle of Charleston, W Va. Also a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren survive. Hidy who was born and reared near Crabbottom spent his entire life in the community. He was the youngest child of the late John A and Matilda Penegar Hidy. The following brothers and sisters having preceeded him in death: Jacob Hull Hidy of Portland, Oregon; John and Henry (twins) of Oklahoma City, Okla; Caroline Gray of Illinois; Catherine Lantz of Indiana; Mary Jane, wife of Mr J E Arbogast of Crabbottom; Sammie Hidy of Crabbottom; and Sallie Seiver of Columbus, Ohio. Funeral services were held Thursday at two o’clock from Central church, with Rev H E Skelton officiating, assisted by other ministers of the community. Interment followed in the Wimer cemetery. Funeral took place at Central Church the 15th by his pastor Rev H E Skelton, assisted by ministers Johnson of Monterey, Greenwood of Durbin and Spitger of Mathias, W Va Active pallbearers: Dr B T Swecker, Messrs Harry Marshall, J D Waybright, W L Arbogast, B H Oolaw Honorary bearers: Messrs W C Snyder, E N. Wlmer, Ira W Nicholas, C E Arbogast, G E Colaw, George Swecker, A P McNulty, P M Propst, William Gum, Luther Hammer, C T Wimer, R H Crummett. Flowers were beautiful and profuse from different sections: Charleston, W Va, Greenville, and Weyers Cave, Morgantown; Employees of Pocahontas Tannery Co, W Va, and friends of Crabbottom Valley, Captain and Mrs David N Reay of Saintalucia and Morgantown, W Va, sent sympathy and flowers. Mrs Reay is a granddaughter of the deceased, the daughter of Prof and Mrs W B Simmons of Berkeley Springs. Flower bearers were the Misses Edith and Arbutus Hidy of Staunton and Waynesboro, Darla Patricia Simmons of Berkeley Springs, W Va, Mrs Weldon Wimer, and Doris Eugenia Hidy, Crabbttom. These five were grand daughters: Mrs A F McNulty, a great niece, Mrs Walker Wilfong and the Misses Wreathie and Dahlia Ruckman. Lillian, wife of Dr B T Swecker was superintendent of the flower arrangement. Those from a distance were — Rev Mr Greenwood from Durbin, W Va; Rev Spitzer, Mathias, W Va; Mr Bruce Showalter, Weyers Cave; Miss Velma Spitler, Greenville, Va, Mrs Norma Puffenbarger, Mr and Mrs Warie Hoover, Mr and Mrs Fred Wimer, Frank, W Va, Cpl. Wallace Hidy of Camp Davis, N C; and Miss Lora Kyle of Staunton. Mr Hidy was born the 3rd of March 1856, the son of John A and Matilda Penejar Hidy. His mother was born and reared in Franklin, W Va. He was the youngest of eight children. Oldest Caroline V wife of Joseph Grey of Ill; Catherine Hull married Andrew Lantz of Ill; Sarah F married John Seiver of New Ha--pden, last moved to Columbus, Ohio. Jacob Hull of Portland, Oregon married Martha Hansel of Crabbottom, Mary J married Dr J E Arbogast of Crabbottom, John Radolph, Oklahoma City, first wife Samantha Davis, second Harriet Craig of Craigsville, Hery Clay of Champagne, Ill married a Miss Sitlington of McDowell, Samuel Breckenridge and James Buchanan. Mr Hidy was a son-in-law of the late Lieutenant Allen and Mrs Roxanna Judy Colaw, marrying the oldest daughter, Lura Virginia February 5. 1888. To this union were born six children Edna Lillian wife of W D Wimer, Cortland, NY; Warren Colaw, Crabbottom; Charles Wilbur Clifford, died in infancy, Mary Catherine, wife of Prof W B Simmons, Berkeley Springs, W Va; James Fremont, Massena, NY; Ocie McNeal, was widow of the late Rev N C Rice (his last charge Mt Solon, Va) second marriage Russel B Hinkle of Charleston City, W Va. Twenty five grand children ad thirteen great-grandchildren survive. A niece, Mrs Charles Alexander of McDowell and Middlebrook could not be present. He has one great nephew Mr Earl Slaven living in Crabbottom, I one niece in Springfield, Oregon, Mrs Summie Ware, her husband born and reared in Elkins, W Va. Mr Hidy was a consistent member of the Methodist Church for 63 years; also a charter member of the I00F, for many years, an order he loved, praised and adored. He is much loved by his companion and children. He has been with us a long time and will be greatly missed also by others who knew him. Highland Recorder (Montgomery,VA) Vol 65, No 5 29 January 1943 ************************ Hidy Marker Dedication Set At Blue Grass Blue Grass - Under the auspices of the George Washington Cleek Chapter of The Sons of The American Revolution a memorial marker will be dedicated to John Hidy on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30th, 1977 at 3 pm. The dedication will be held at the Hidy Graveyard in Blue Grass. To find the Hidy Graveyard you take Rt 640 North at the Blue Grass Post office and continue for less than a mile to Rt 644. A left turn at this intersection takes you to the Hidy Graveyard in exactly 3.3 miles west. Johann Henrich Heyde (John Hidy) came to America in 1765 from Germany. He had military training, was apprenticed as a shoemaker and carpenter before leaving his homeland. In 1775 in Philadelphia he was drafted to fight in the war. He was taken to Valley Forge where he met General Von Steuben, who had trained him in Germany. He was assigned to duty as assistant drill master and remained at Valley Forge for the duration of the war. In 1784 he moved to Higiland County, where he died in 1823 and is buried on his land in an unmarked grave. At that time some of the soldiers did not want their graves marked for fear of vandals. This marker began as a Bicentennial project of the Hidy Reunion Association in Ohio, spearheaded by Compatriot Albert Stanley Hidy, Sr of Concord, California. Albert Hidy cannot attend the dedication but some of the Hidy family will be present. The service of dedication will be lead by Hugh S Gwin, President of the George Washington Cleek Chapter, of Bath County. It is hoped that the citizens of Blue Grass and Highland will share in this dedication as it is the culmination of a dream that began for Albert Hidy in 1972, and will honor a patriot of Blue Grass and Highland County.
