Description	:	The Anita community was stunned yesterday by the sudden death of J. Burl Roots. Although Burl had been in ill health a short time with a heart ailment, he had been able to return and spent some time at his business. Death came Wednesday morning at his home on West Main. The Anita Emergency Unit was called and he was rushed to Cass County Memorial Hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival there. The Anita Emergency Unit was called and he was rushed to Cass County Memorial Hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival there. James Burl Roots was born at Massena, Jan. 25, 1903, the son of Samuel Oscar and Hattie Frisbie Roots. He grew up in the Massena vicinity and on Sept. 2, 1925, he was united in marriage to Carrie Hundorf at Corning. They farmed for 14 years south of Anita and in 1940 moved to Anita and took over the John Deere Implement business. On May 9, 1951 he purchased the Redwood Steakhouse on West Main, and made many improvements and developed into one of the best known evening eating places in southwest Iowa. Mr. Roots was a member of the Masonic Obedience Lodge 380 AF & AM. He took an active part in the Chamber of Commerce, had just completed his term as president of the Anita Development, Inc., belonged to and supported many other local and area organizations, and was a member of the Anita Congregational Church. He is survived by his wife Carrie, one son, Ronald of Fremont. Nebr., and two daughters Mrs. Donald (Marjorie) Karns of Anita and Mrs. Charles (Marilyn) Robinson of St. Petersburg, Ind.; also four grandsons and two granddaughters; a sister, Mrs. Fred (Eleanor) Boswell of Corning and a brother, Carl Roots of Sacramento, Calif. He was preceded in death by his father and mother. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at the First Congregational United Church of Christ. The Rev.
