William Calder was born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, October, 1690. Came to America with his father, Alexander, about 1730. In 1740 he married Elizabeth Brooks, who was born in Boston, Mass., in 1729. William Calder was born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, October, 1690. Came to America with his father, Alexander, about 1730. In 1740 he married Elizabeth Brooks, who was born in Boston, Mass., in 1729. Their children were: George Skene, born October 1750; William born November, 1753; James, born February, 1755; Elizabeth, born September 1756; and Mary, born March 1759. James Calder, son of William and Elizabeth Brooks Calder, was born in Boston, Mass., February 1755, married in 1778, Agnes Boise, daughter of John and Mehitable Sheafe (Broadus) Boise of Boston and died in Providence, R. I., Oct. 9, 1843. He learned the manufacture of paper in Milton. He was one of the Minutemen and was in the Battle of Lexington, and later enlisted in the army and served eight months in and around Boston. He was pensioned. He came to Providence, R. I. in 1780, to superintend the building of a paper mill for Samuel Thurber & Co. on the site of what was later Allen Print Works. He remained with that company until 1811 and later had a paper mill in Onleyville. The last years of his life were spent with his sons, John and William in Providence. Mehitable Sheafe, daughter of Jacob Sheafe and Mary, his wife, was born in Boston, Suffol County, Mass., Sept. 4, 1711. About 1740 she married Jacob Broadus in Boston and by him had two children. In 1757 she married a second time, John Boise. He was born in the north of Ireland and landed in Boston in 1755 with his father’s family, and afterward removed to Londonderry, N. H. Children: Agnes, born March 7, 1759; John, born 1760; Mehitable, born 1762; Margaret, born 1763 Agnes Boise, daughter of John and Mehitable Sheafe (Broadus) Boise of Boston was born in Boston, March 7, 1750. She married James Calder, Aug. 13, 1778, and died in Providence, R. I., March, 1840. Their children were: Sally, unmarried; Nancy, married Nehemiah Beckford; James Boise married Lucy Metcalf; Mehitable, unmarried; Fanny, married Samuel Metcalf; John, married first, Louisa Howard, second, Lydia Peck; William. Married Eliza Spencer; Charlotte, married George Read. We have no records of any Hugh Calder in this branch of the family. I believe the GBC at the end of the article stands for George Beckford Calder (1830-1915), grandson of James and Agnes (Boise Calder and whose son, Albert Lawton Calder (1862-1923) applied for membership in the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) using the above research as evidence of his eligibility.
