Read More	Independent-Observer, Conrad, MT, 18 Oct 1945: Funeral Saturday For James Sanders, Pioneer Railroader and Farmer James Sanders was born July 5, 1861, at Galt, Ontario, one of eight children born to Robert and Elsie (McIntosh) Sanders, all of whom have passed away. Between 12 and 20 years of age, he worked on a farm, in a woolen mill, and an iron foundry. In 1882 he enlisted for a period of five years in The Northwest Mounted Police, coming to the Northwest, via the Great Lakes to Duluth, via rail to Bismarck, N. D., and via Missouri River boat to a point below Fort Benton near the present site of Virgille, and from there marched to old Fort Walsh about 45 miles north of the Canadian line. Stationed at different points in Saskatchewan and Alberta during his service of five years, he was discharged on completion of his term of enlistment with rank of Sergeant, and came to the United States. April 22, 1887, he was employed es engine watchman and sent out to a point about 12 miles west of Minot on the Great Northern Railroad which was then under construction. He was employed all the time on the front, during the building and track laying on the road all the way to Helena, arriving at Great Falls October 15th and in Helena November 15, 1887. When the end of the track was near Big Sandy, he was promoted to fireman and fired one of the first four engines into Great Falls, and was promoted to engineer January, 1890, and continued in service until September 1, 1912, being appointed Superintendent of the Montana Western Railway, retiring June 30, 1918 to engage in farming, and has since resided on his farm near Manson. He was united in marriage with Emily Almira Ayers October 3, 1893 and lived in Helena, Butte, Clancy, and Great Falls before moving to Pondera county. There were born to this union two daughters, Mrs. John Archer, Colfax, Wash., Mrs. Earl Mooney, Manson, and three sons, Robert A., of Winslow, Arizona, Gordon R. and James F., both living near Manson. In 1904 he was elected to the House of Representatives and in 1906 to the State Senate, serving in the Ninth, Tenth and Eleventh sessions representing Cascade county. He introduced the bills providing for Electric Headlights on Locomotive Engines, and Sixteen Hour Law for railroad men, and took an active part in the enactment of several other bills that became laws during his term in the House and Senate. On October 3, 1943 Mr. and Mrs. Sanders celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary with a specially arranged dinner at the Conrad Hotel. At that time all of their children were present and most of the grandchildren. In the years the Sanders family have lived in the Manson community they have endeared themselves to a large circle of friends, all of whom were saddened at the passing of this grand man and neighbor. Mr. Sanders became a member of the Cascade No. 34 Blue Lodge in Great Falls in April of 1908. Later he transferred to the Valier lodge and on February 21, 1933 transferred to Conrad Lodge No. 80 A. F. & A. M. He had also been a member of the Royal Arch Chapter in Conrad since 1913. Services were held at the Presbyterian church on Saturday at 1 p. m., the Rev. Davidson officiating. There was also a Masonic burial service. Interment was in the Mausoleum in Great Falls.
