Description	:	James Clinton Darnell, 89, of Gainesville passed away of natural causes on Tuesday June 23, 2009. He was born October 30, 1919 in Yarnaby, Oklahoma. Read More	James Clinton Darnell, 89, of Gainesville passed away of natural causes on Tuesday June 23, 2009. He was born October 30, 1919 in Yarnaby, Oklahoma. At the age of one, he and his family moved to Macon and Somerville, Tennessee. He joined the Army Air Corps within two months of graduating from Fayette County High School. He served his country overseas in Corsica, Italy, Iceland, the Azores and Fukuoko, Japan. He said the most eventful moment of his life occurred while he was stationed in Memphis, Tennessee where he met Lottie Christine Avery, a member of the Women's Air Corps. She became his wife and partner for life. They married on September 6, 1946 and have been married for 62 years. Stateside, he was stationed at the Alabama Polytechnic Institute, Auburn; University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa with AFROTC and then Laughlin Air Force Base, Del Rio, Texas. He retired from the military as a Master Sergeant on October 31, 1960 after serving 22 years. After his military service he worked as a barber in Gainesville for 11 years until 1972. He then worked as a postal carrier for the United States Postal Service in Gainesville for 17 years, retiring in 1989 at the age of 70. Jim and Lottie were members of North Central Baptist Church and, later, Northwest Baptist Church. He served as Sunday school class secretary/treasurer for a combined total of over 40 years. He also served as a secretary for the Retired Letter Carriers Union. Jim is survived by his wife, Lottie Avery Darnell, two daughters: Sadie Darnell and Norma Darnell and grandson P. J. Fancher. He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert B. and Lula Bell Giles; seven brothers and sisters; son, Gary James Darnell; and precious granddaughter Sara Christine Fancher. Jim is renowned for his homemade jalapeno cornbread which he loved to cook and loved even more to share. Jim Darnell loved life; loved people; never met a stranger and adored his family and friends. He enjoyed gardening, cooking and college football. He was innately compassionate, generous and an eternal optimist. His goals in life were to be a good man, a loving husband and a nurturing father. He epitomized each of these qualities throughout his life.
