James was given his mother's maiden name Cobean for his middle name. By 1840 he moved with his family to Frederickstown, Knox County, Ohio, where he met and married Sarah Jane Durbin on October 14,1858 in Frederickstown. There were three children born to them in Frederickstown, Albina, John, and William.
