The explosion occurred while a maintenance crew of five men was repairing a 16-inch pipeline three-quarters of a mile southwest of Waskom, just across the Louisiana-Texas state line, in an old field owned by the Abney estate. The scene of the blast is near a gasoline plant of the absorption type now being built in the area by the Arkansas-Louisiana Gas Company to utilize gas from the Waskom field. The Waskom school is also nearby. Bodies Tossed Into Air James B. Harris, safety director of the company, said eye-witnesses about 50 yards from the scene of the blast heard a terrific explosion and looked up to see the bodies falling from 100 feet in the air. The two men killed and the one injured were working in a hole in the ground in which the pipeline had been laid bare so that it could be repaired. They were attaching leak clamps to shut off the leaking gas. The line probably carried at least 200 pounds of pressure per square inch. On top of the ground at the edge of the hole were two more youths, members of the crew, who were not injured, Harry Bryson. 21, of Rome, Ga, a student at Georgia Tech. and S. E. Sentell. Jr. of Shreveport. There was no fire connected with the blast, the force of the gas in the pipeline causing a "blowout." The explosion blew out a six-foot section of pipe, ripped it open and left the bottom half of the section flattened in the hole. Funeral services, in charge of the Osborn funeral home, will be held at Lockesburg, Ark., the family home, near DeQueen, probably today. The family came to Shreveport about a year ago from Pennsylvania. Working In "Bell Hole" The men killed and injured were working in what is technically known as a "bell hole" at the time of the blast. This hole is shaped like a bell, with the small end at the top of the ground and the larger end at the bottom of the pit, along the pipe-line. These holes are ordinarily two to four feet in diameter at the top, considerably larger at the bottom end 4 to 8 feet deep. The blast enlarged the hole to about 10 or 15 feet in diameter at the top, blowing out a six-foot section of pipe. Pin-hole leaks had been giving trouble in the 16-inch pipeline, which is nine miles long, running from the Waskom field to Longwood, La., where it ties into the main 20-Inch line. Hundreds of curious who thronged to the field where the explosion occurred were kept back by deputy sheriffs who warned that another pipeline nearby may have been weakened by the force of the explosion and might also blow up. J. B Gasquet, Times' photographer, obtained special permission to approach the hole alone at his own risk and obtained a photograph Girl "Hears Bomb" Constable W, L. Shadrach of Waskom, one of the first to reach the spot, said the explosion was clearly heard in Waskom and rattled windows and shook frame buildings. The escaping gas roared for half an hour until shut off in the line at another point, the constable said. Justice of the Peace John L. Rowb held an Inquest, acting as coroner under Texas law and returned a decision that the men had reached their deaths from an explosion of gas in a pipeline operated by the Arkansas-Louisiana pipeline department while repairing a leak. Constable Shadrach said the bodies were hurled some distance away from the hole He said one of the eyewitnesses was a girl, Leona Dickins, who was found four miles away, walking rapidly down the highway. She was quoted by the constable as saying she thought a bomb had fallen and that a war had broken out and her only desire was to leave the country; and although her home was near the place where the blast occurred, she had already walked four miles down the highway when overtaken.
