"Go West young man and grow up with the country," the words of Horace Greeley sent many a young man on an adventurous trail from the East . As it had sent many so it was with James Whitehead, a 23 year old Connecticut lad, who one day in 1876 bid farewell to his Salisbury friends, boarded a train, and two days and a night later was in a thriving little mid-western city, St. Joseph. This young man was not interested in following the long route to California, but saw the opportunities of establishing down to good farming in this section of the state. He settled on Empire Prairie, near King City, and three years later was united in marriage to Elizabeth Gibson, a Wisconsin girl. They made their home in Andrew county for five years, and then moved to Nodaway county which has been their home for forty years. If he had heeded Greeley's words probably he would never have gone West and never would have met the Wisconsin girl. These events were reflected in their memories yesterday at their home at 522 South Buchanan street where they celebrated fifty years of married life - a golden wedding anniversary. Dozens of cards and letters from old friends and neighbors made the event all the happier. The day was spent quietly in reading congratulations. Mr. Whitehead will observe his seventy-sixth birthday anniversary April 12. Mrs. Whitehead is now 76 years old. The aged couple maintain fine health. They have been living in Maryville ever since their retirement from the farm a year ago, To this union seven children were born. All are living with the exception of one, Lester William, who died at 2 years of age. The living are John, Henry and Leslie Whitehead, of Maryville; Mrs. Ed Hilton, Parnell; Mrs. W. O. Griffey, west of Maryville; Mrs. Wilfred Bird, of Shenandoah, Ia. There are eight grandchildren. "Mr. Greeley's words were alright," Mr. Whitehead said, "but it was the path to a hard life. The work brought hard labor and long hours. This I didn't mind. If a man intended to live at all in those days both were required. The thing I objected to was eating corn bread. It was good eating once in a while, but three times a day was too much." "A man had all he could do to keep the farm going, the rocks were to be cleared from the fields for ploughing; wood was needed for fuel. There was many a time when I was called out of bed at 1 o'clock in the morning to begin a days work that ended at 9 o'clock that night. There were times when I didn't go to bed at all. The work just had to be done," Mr. Whitehead said. The conversation was broken into by Mrs. Whitehead with the words, "I'm glad men don't have to work such long hours as they did then.
