Mr. Donovan, a lifelong resident of the Garryowen community, was a son of the late Cornelius and Ellen (Hickson) Donovan, and was born on September 20, 1885. Following his education in the schools of his home community, he was united in Holy Matrimony on November 24, 1929 with Miss Agnes Hawkes, the marriage also taking place in St. Patrick's church and was solemnized by the late Rev. D. P Mulcahy. To this union were born three children — two sons and one daughter. Both sons preceded the father in death. He is survived by his wife and the daughter, Mrs. Merlin (Marian) Mahoney, of Otter Creek. Other survivors who mourn his departure from this life are five brothers and two sisters — Vincent, Chris, Clem and Ignatius, of Garryowen, and Patrick, of Dubuque; Mrs. Janie Meehan, Dubuque, and Mrs. William Lynch, of Waterloo, and a number of nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death other than the parents and two sons were one brother and two sisters. Pallbearers, all nephews, were: Arnold, Justin and J. C. Donovan, William Hutchins, Francis Shanahan, Herbert Hayes. Mr. Donovan, a member of St. Patrick's parish and its Holy Name Society was a lifetime member of the one parish. His associations and friendships were numerous. His life was one of usefulness. Devote to his family, he will be greatly missed. Friends in large numbers have expressed to those near and dear to him their deepest sympathy in their hour of sorrow. Devaney Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
