D. Elledge Passed Away at His Home in Kansas City Saturday -- Burial Here Tuesday J. D. Elledge, one, of the best known former citizens of McCune, who was for years manager of the Hood implement house in this city, died at his home in Kansas City Saturday following a lingering illness. A short funeral service was held at the home in Kansas City Monday, after which the remains were brot [sic] to McCune and services were held from the local M. E. Church Tuesday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by Rev. Baitty, Mr. Elledge's pastor in Kansas City, assisted by Rev. Ira W. Torrence and the local lodge of Masons. Mr. Elledge was a resident of McCune and vicinity from young manhood, and his life was a shining example of righteousness. The large circle of friends he leaves, speak nothing but good of him. James Daniel Elledge was born in Jersey county, Illinois April 8, 1858, and came to Cherokee county, Kansas in 1878, making the entire journey on horse back. He resided in and near McCune from that time until three years ago, when he with his family moved to Kansas City, Mo. to engage in the retail business. He was married to Nancy Scott August 28, 1880, and to this union four children were born. Nannie Scott died in infancy while the three sons survive. They are Harvey G. of Painesville, Ohio, George A. of Tampico. Mexico, and J. Clifton of the home address in Kansas City. His wife died in February, 1890, at which time, with his mother as housekeeper he moved from the farm to McCune where he was employed in the general store of Chas. Elerick. He was later connected for about twenty-two years with the Hood Implement Co. He was married to Carrie A. Phelps, October 1, 1895, and of their five children, Lloyd Phelps who died at the age of four and a half years, and an infant daughter preced their father, while Emmet R. of Winficld, Kansas, and Ruth and Margaret survive to comfort and cheer their grieved mother. "Dan" as he was known to all his friends, was the son of George Thomas and Fairzina Simpson Elledge. He was one of six children, four of whom survive him. Three brothers; Wm. Jasper of St. Louis, Mo.; Sylvester B. of Parsons, Kansas, and A. P. of Independence, Mo., and one sister, Mrs., J. E. Ames of Parsons. Mrs. John Streetmaker, his eldest sister died August 14, 1901. He died at his home at 4044 Baltimore Ave., Kansas City, Mo. on August 25, 1923, after a lingering illness which demonstrated a Christian fortitude, that was a revelation to those who were near him. To his friends and neighbors he was always a courteous Christian gentleman. In his home he was a devoted father and loving husband. In suffering and in death he was ever patient and thoughtful of others. Surely the recompense of the faithful is his just reward.
