Description	:	James D. Ketterman, a real estate broker and musician for more than five decades, died Tuesday at his home in Fort Lauderdale. He was 89. Ketterman had reactivated his real estate license about 10 years ago and was working as an associate broker at South Florida Group Realty in Fort Lauderdale, said James Bennell, a longtime friend. Ketterman had reactivated his real estate license about 10 years ago and was working as an associate broker at South Florida Group Realty in Fort Lauderdale, said James Bennell, a longtime friend. He had also been managing the Imperial Point Gardens apartment complex for the past 15 years, Bennell said. Ketterman also owned a concrete business in Pompano Beach. Ketterman spent the rest of his time as a professional drummer, performing with such groups as Danny and the Tunesman, a jazz trio, at various venues throughout Broward County. He also performed with the Tamarac Symphony, Northwest Broward Symphony, Hallandale Symphony, Sunrise Pops Orchestra, Deerfield Beach Concert Band, and the Johnnie Baker Trio, in addition to other area combos and Big Bands. During the 1940s, Ketterman played with singers Johnny Desmond, Bing Crosby and many of the Big Bands of that era. "He was an excellent drummer and timpani player," Bennell said. "That was more or less his life, really." James Devere Ketterman was born on Jan. 21, 1911, on his family's farm near Urbana, Iowa in the same house in which his father was born. He graduated from Palatine High School in Palatine, Ill., in 1927. He later completed an administration course at Chicago Aeronautical University, in addition to accounting courses. He studied music in Chicago from the late 1930s to the early '40s. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Force's Field Artillery Division and U.S. Army Air Force Special Services, rising to the rank of first sergeant. He was married twice, to Irene Pinello and Joanne Broten. While he was living in Chicago, Ketterman was employed by Western Electric Co. for 11 years and Linde Air Products Division accounting office for four years. In addition, he owned and operated a garage in Gary, Ind., in the 1950s, Bennell said. While in Gary, he was president of the Gary Downtown Optimist Club and a member of the Gary Elks Lodge. He also played in the Gary Symphony and the U.S. Steel Co. Band. Before he left Indiana in 1959, Ketterman helped organize the Universal Auto Insurance Co. in Indianapolis. In Broward, Ketterman was a director of the Hot Jazz and Alligator Gumbo Society Dixieland musical organization and a member of the Percussive Arts Society and the Broward Personal Computer Association. An avid golfer, Ketterman was club champion at the Tamarac Country Club for a couple of years in the 1960s. He is survived by brothers Joseph and Paul Ketterman of Chicago. A service was held. A memorial bronze plaque will be placed on the Ketterman Family gravesite in the Urbana, IA cemetery. The drumsticks are now silent.
