McLean died on Friday March 15, at nine o'clock a.m. after a long lingering illness. He had been failing in health for three years. His death was caused by Bright's disease. Just before he passed away he called all members of his family to his bed side and told them he was dying and in a few minutes he passed peacefully away. The passing of James D. McLean marks the passing of one of the earliest and best known pioneers of the Rosebud country, having come here when the reservations were first established and married a full blood Indian woman who survives him, the daughter of a famous Sioux war chief, Brave Bull, who died a good many years ago. From this union there have been seven children, five of whom are alive, three boys and two girls. The oldest of the boys, Sam McLean, is in the government service at Carson City, Nevada. The other boys, Robert and Thomas, are successful ranchers on their places near here. The two girl, Mary and Addie, are both married and have good homes. The deceased was born near Hamilton, Ontario Province, Canada in 1854 and therefore was 64 years of age at the time of his death. At the early age of 10 his parents and relatives moved to Kansas, to what is known as Miltonvale, near Concordia, at that time an unsettled country, being inhabited by great herds of buffalo and roaming bands of Indians who were constantly annoying the early white settlers. At the age of 18 he ran away from home and joined an immigrant train that was passing through to Wyoming as a hunter and a helper. After reaching Wyoming he became a trapper and a cowboy and was also a freighter in the Black Hills up to the time of his marriage and settled on the Rosebud, where he has since engaged in stock raising and farming. The funeral took place at St. Francis Mission and a very large crowd attended, and the remains laid to rest in the Catholic Cemetery. A solemn high mass was offered for the deceased and a beautiful funeral sermon was given by Fr. Grothe." Contributor: j.lynn (47147578)
