Read More	James “Ed” “Hildy” Hilderbrand, died Wednesday, October 21, 2009, at Luther Manor Nursing Home in Dubuque. Funeral services at Pursel Davis Funeral Home in Marshalltown, burial in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Ed was born September 23, 1925, in Marshalltown to Leonard and Hilma (Glans) Hilderbrand. He grew up in Marshalltown until high school when his father, a Lt. Colonel in the Army, was sent to Boca Raton, Florida. After high school he joined the Army. He served on a medical ship that went back and forth from Europe to the United States. Upon separation from the Army he came back to Marshalltown. Ed married Frances Farland on Sept 26, 1945, at the Central Christian Church. They spent their entire married lives in Marshalltown. He was a Captain for the Marshalltown Fire Department retiring in 1980. This was a job he loved and respected; he enjoyed his friendships with his fellow firefighters. Ed started his fire career in the old fire station next to the old library. He especially enjoyed cooking his famous spaghetti for them. He dearly loved his family, and spending time with them. One of his greatest joys was secretly giving the grand kids money. Ed was known for his cigars. He loved the summers he spent at Twin Anchors campgrounds and all his friends there, his other passions were the Hawkeye's, Cubs, and listening to music. He was a life member of the VFW Harry C. Harter Post # 846, a 65 year member of the American Legion Frank Lewis Glick Post #0046, and a member of the Masonic Temple. He is survived by his daughter Colette (Richard) Downs of Dubuque, Iowa; grandsons Jeff (Molly) Downs and Ryan Downs of Dubuque; great-grandchildren Noah, Lauren, and Adriana; his sister Vivian Hamilton of San Jose ,CA; sister-in-laws Mary Ann Hilderbrand of West Des Moines and Shirley Hilderbrand of Carson City NV; and nieces and nephews. Ed was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Frances; brothers Richard, Robert, and Merle; and his sister Helen Ashing; siblings Keith, Kenneth, Betty, and Marilyn in infancy; and his great-granddaughter Siena.
