He was born May 21, 1924 in Milton, Iowa to Otto J. and Beryle Marie Atkins Gilchrist. He married Alleen M. Jacks on April 24, 1949. He was a graduate of Milton High School in 1942. He was born May 21, 1924 in Milton, Iowa to Otto J. and Beryle Marie Atkins Gilchrist. He married Alleen M. Jacks on April 24, 1949. He was a graduate of Milton High School in 1942. A veteran of the U.S.Army, he was a SSG serving at the Battle of the Bulge during World War II as a medic. He worked at Sheaffer Pen Co. in Ft. Madison, the State of Iowa and for 30 years at John Deere Ottumwa Works, retiring in 1982. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, a member of O.B.Nelson Post #3 of the American Legion, Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and was past president of the Mens Bowling Association. Surviving are a daughter, Constance J.(Jeffry)Lightly of Des Moines; a granddaughter, Carrie Ann(Ron)Evangelesta of San Tan Valley, AZ; four great grandchildren, Caitlin, Aaron, Ryan and Addyson; a brother, Norvin(Yosanda)Gilchrist of Ft. Madison, IA; a nephew, Richard(Mary)Gilchrist of Collierville, TN and a cousin, Marcia(Joe)McLeland of Danville, IA. Funeral services will be 1 pm Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with Gary West officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery with Military services conducted by O.B.Nelson Post #3 of the American Legion adn Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Visitation begins 10 am Tuesday with the family present one hour prior to the services on Wednesday. Memorials may be made to Parkinson's Foundation.
