Description	:	Mr. James E. Payne, 90, of West Burlington died at 10:10 a.m. Thursday, April 1, 2010, at Great River Medical Center — Klein Center. Born September 23, 1919 in Cantril, Iowa he was the son of James Eugene and Alma Wanzer Payne. On December 20, 1941 he married Kathleen Burkett in Elvins, Missouri. She preceded him in death on December 20, 2004. Mr. Payne was a Navy veteran of World War II. He worked at Van Buren Telephone Co. for nine years before moving to Burlington. Payne, 90, of West Burlington died at 10:10 a.m. Thursday, April 1, 2010, at Great River Medical Center — Klein Center. Born September 23, 1919 in Cantril, Iowa he was the son of James Eugene and Alma Wanzer Payne. On December 20, 1941 he married Kathleen Burkett in Elvins, Missouri. She preceded him in death on December 20, 2004. Mr. Payne was a Navy veteran of World War II. He worked at Van Buren Telephone Co. for nine years before moving to Burlington. Here he worked for Northwestern Bell for 18 years as an equipment man then 12 years as a telephone engineer for Continental Telephone Co., retiring in 1982. Mr. Payne was a member of First Christian Church, Masonic Lodge AF&AM, Telephone Pioneers and ConTel Retirees. He was an avid woodworker and enjoyed reading Survivors include two daughters, Linda (Craig) Williams of Burlington and Rebecca (Steve) Hamilton of Athens, Illinois; two sons, Lavene (Sheryl) Payne of Muscatine and Dan (Mona) Payne of Waterloo; 14 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. His wife, parents, three brothers and five sisters preceded him in death. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 5th, in Lunning Chapel. The funeral service for Mr. Payne will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 5th, in Lunning Chapel with the Rev. Tom Smith officiating. Interment will be at 2:00 p.m. in Maple Grove Cemetery, Cantril. A memorial has been established for Maple Grove Cemetery Association.
