In his will written 24 January, 1784 and proved 15 March, 1784 (recorded in Cecil County Maryland Will Book 5 page 10) James Eakins bequeaths to James Alexander the sum of £10 and one-half of his wearing apparel; to Samuel Hunter for the use of his son, James Hunter, the sum of £10; to John Cooper the other half of his wearing apparel; to sister Catherine the sum of £10; to James Maxwell Jr., his large Bible and gun; the sum of £10 to be used toward the building of a meeting house in West Nottingham; to his wife Susannah Eakins the remainder of his real and personal estate during her lifetime, with any negro slaves who are of age to be freed upon her death and for any slaves who are not yet of age to be willed to whoever she deems proper, or set free if she so chooses. His negro man, Will, to be given a loom and tackling; to his negro woman, Esther, a bed and bedclothes, her wheel and reel, and the use of a house on his estate with the field joining the orchard containing three acres for three years. Executors wife Susannah Eakins and John Cooper. Witnesses Edward Booth, John Willson, Eleanor Wilson. In place of his signature, James certified the will with his mark, indicating that he was not able to write his own name. From the description of goods bequeathed to his slaves James was evidently a weaver. Six years after his death a joint land grant patent was issued in Cecil Co., Maryland in 1790 to James Eakins widow, Susannah Eakins, and to Isabella Maxwell called "The Widows' Double Lot." The survey for this tract is found in Book 1C#D, folio 696, and the patent certificate is found in Book 1C#E, folio 496, patent #1054. James Eakins widow, Susannah Eakins, died in 1797 leaving a will written on 29 October, 1793, proved on 8 August, 1997, recorded in Cecil County Maryland Will Book 6, page 115. Her will mentions cousin James Alexander son of Andrew of Virginia, cousin Mary Ewing, cousin Susannah Cooper (her daughters Mary and Susannah), cousin John Blackburn (his daughter Susannah), friend James Maxwell, cousins Rebecca Wisbey, cousin Ephraim Blackburn and his sister Susannah Cooper. Executors friends Robert Caldwell, James Maxwell. Witnesses James Thompson, John Thompson, John Scott. Neither James Eakins nor his widow Susannah mentioned any children of their own in either of their wills, so apparently they were a childless couple without any living descendants.
