A terrible accident occurred in Great Oak township this when James Ernst was burned so badly that he died at the local hospital at 1:00 p. m. Mr. Ernst was lighting the fire and was using kerosene when an explosion took place. He was wrapped in flames and with his clothes burning he rushed from the house and jumped into the water tank in the yard to extinguish the flames. He then took out his automobile and drove to the Charles Higgins farm a mile and a half away. Mr Higgins brought him to the local hospital where he died at about 1 o clock. The house and all the contents were destroyed by the fire. Mrs. Ernst escaped with a slight burn on her forehead Mr. and Mrs. Ernst resided in one of Charles Higgins' houses and Mr. Ernst was working for Mr, Higgins. He has been on this farm for the past three years. The accident is a regrettable one and has aroused the sympathy of everyone. JAMES ERNST LAID TO REST SATURDAY Died from Oil Explosion Had been Resident of Palo Alto County for Four Years Living in Great Oak Township — Relatives Have Sympathy of Community. The funeral of James Ernst, whose tragic death by burning was told in our last issue, was held at the Assumption church here on Saturday morning at ten- o'clock, Very Rev. J. G. Murtagh officiating. The burial was in St. John's cemetery. James Ernst was born in Ford county, Illinois, May 22, 1896. He came to Iowa with his parents and other members of his family in 1902. They settled on a farm in Pocahontas county, near Pocahontas. In 1915 Mr. Ernst united in marriage with Miss Mary Manwarren at Pocahontas. They resided there until four years ago when they came to Palo Alto. county, and located in Great Oak township; where Mr. Ernst subsequently worked a farm for Charles Higgins up to the time of his death. He was a good worker, was honest, industrious and sincere. He was doing well and he and his wife were living comfortably. They had no children. Mr. Ernst carried an insurance policy of $1,000. His mother died on October 17, 1924. One sister, Marjorie, died in infancy. Besides his wife, Mr. Ernst is survived by his aged father, Philip Ernst, who is 85 years of age five brothers and four sisters. The brothers are George, William and Fred Ernst of Rolfe, John Ernst of Ware and Harry Ernst of Pocahontas. The sisters are Mrs. Clara Flaherty, who lives in Minnesota, Mrs. William Swick of Illinois and Mrs. Charles Pershing of Pocahontas. All were here to attend the funeral except Mrs. Swick, who found it impossible to come. Palo Alto Tribune, June 10 and 17, 1925
