Funeral services were held Friday at Memorial United Methodist Church in Poolesville for James Edgar "Ed" Ferrell Jr., 59, of Dickerson and formerly of Annapolis. Mr. Ferrell died Sept. 1 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville after a lengthy illness with cancer. A landscape designer, he operated Ed Ferrell's Designs in Dickerson at the time of his death. Previously he owned and operated the former Ferrell's Gardens in Bowie and the Home and Garden Shops in Great Falls and Potomac. In earlier years, he founded and hosted "Garden Living," a television program sponsored by the University of Maryland Cooperative Extension Service. He was born in Frederick, graduated from the University of Maryland and earned a doctorate in horticulture from North Carolina State University. He served in the Navy from 1955 to 1959. A resident of Annapolis for several years in the 1960s, he designed the memorial garden in front of Calvary United Methodist Church on Rowe Boulevard. He lived in Potomac before moving to Dickerson four years ago. He was an active member of Memorial United Methodist Church. Surviving are five sisters, Helen O'Leary of Baltimore, Louise Allen of Fairfax, Va., Ruth Ellen Wilmot of Poolesville, Jean Dorsey of Charles Town, W.Va., and Thelma Grams of Knoxville, Md. Burial was in the Reformed Cemetery in Jefferson, with arrangements by Keeney and Basford Funeral Home of Frederick.
