Description	:	Edd Pittman was the son of Joe P Pittman (should be Jacob P "Jake") and Dossie _ (should be Rosie Bowers) according to his wife's information on his death certificate, he lived most if not all of his married life at Conestee Mill about six miles south of the city of Greenville, one of the oldest textile mills in the South on the Reedy River that had been in operation since around 1835, it was where his wife's family was also living in 1900 so I suspect he met her while both were working in this mill. Edd married Clara Gosnell, daughter of Portman "Port" Gosnell and Mary Jane Howard, on 3 Feb 1901 according to a Pittman researcher (I have no proof), she stated on her 1940 census that she made her first marriage when she was 14 yrs old which would put her birth about 1887, two later husbands' cemetery monuments both put her birth in 1888. On the 1900 census, Clara was already working in the mill as a spinner, the censustaker listed her age as 17 but she may have been as young as 12, she was the eldest of three still-at-home children (there were at least 9 surviving children) after their mother died about 1897. (I wonder if Clara married so young in part because of her father's unhappy remarriage.) Edd and Clara were married for 22 yrs. Ed and Clara are not on the 1910 or 1920 census's at Conestee, but many of his family lived at Conestee Mill. Edd was living at Conestee Mill in September 1918 when he was listed on the draft as being 37 yrs old, of medium height and build, gray eyes and black hair, he was working for the Conestee Mill and did not write his own name. He was given a classification of "C" which usually means not drafted and was often given to older men of draft age, the start date being birth in 1875. (The classification table listed the most suitable candidates as "A" which was technically supposed to be reserved for single men without dependents but it was a subjective local assignment which often included married men who claimed multiple dependents. Most draftees were put under either A or "C" which was described as a married man dependent on his wife for support. The actual government instructions gave specific descriptions for each category A - F which seem to have been ignored in quite a few cases. B & D were both married deadbeats, the only difference being family income source, and E / F were unskilled farm/industrial laborers, but these last were rarely used. I wonder if the "C" meant Edd was not a physically strong man, he only lived for five more years and died of a progressive lung disorder.) Edd and Clara had at least three children, two of whom were dead before the 1930 census: Ollie Lee, L F (son), and Montez Pittman (girl). Ollie Lee is also buried in this cemetery, L F is buried in Lattimer, SC (Abbeville Co) where his mother was living with her 2nd husband M Lawrence Ledford in 1925 and died of epilepsy at the age of 12 while alone in the house. Montez was living with her mother and a new stepfather James Murphy Bobo in Laurens in 1930 and she died at age 19 of a septic uterus caused from a failed pregnancy and subsequent abortion to try and save her life. Edd and Clara have no known grandchildren. Edd died of a lung ailment at age 42 that the doctor listed as both TB and influenza, but he was under a doctor's care for about a year; I suspect what was later called "brown lung disease" caused by breathing in cotton fibers inside the unventilated mills of his day. Today we would call it COPD, a general term that covers progressive decreasing lung function caused by a range of causes. Brown Lung was epidemic among cotton mill workers until the mill owners started ventilating the mills several decades later. Edd's obituary says he was "a loyal member of Conestee Baptist Church, and a member of Fowler Council Junior Order United American Mechanics", so he was likely a mechanic at the mill in charge of machinery (his draft card didn't specify his job). It also states he was survived by two brothers: Jack & Frank Pittman, both of Greenville, which was evidently information given by Clara. (At the time of Edd's death, he actually had at least three sisters and three brothers who were still alive.) Edd's death certificate states he was buried here where his first child Ollie Lee is buried, he may not have a marker. --Jeni
