Description	:	James Edward Hoffie Gone But Never Forgotten James "Heavy" Edward Hoffie passed away on May 2, 2016 at Gregory Avera Hospital at the age of 71 after a short and very courageous battle with brain cancer. Heavy was born on April 3, 1945 to Gerald Weldon Hoffie and Louise Margaret (Fiebelkorn) Hoffie in Gregory, SD. Heavy was an excellent student and an outstanding baseball player. Heavy was born on April 3, 1945 to Gerald Weldon Hoffie and Louise Margaret (Fiebelkorn) Hoffie in Gregory, SD. Heavy was an excellent student and an outstanding baseball player. He played on the baseball team the year they won the Championship. Heavy graduated from Gregory High School in 1963. After high school during the years 1966-1978, Heavy attended college and was very successful with many opportunities working in Chicago, IL at the Sears Tower for Jalet Corp as a sale rep with his brother Jerry Hoffie. Then he lived in Rapid City, SD working as a Pest Control and Lawn Care Service Technician for Warren Chemical and was employed at Homestake Sawmill with his other brother Cal Hoffie to whom he was very close. Around the year 1982 Heavy started his own business of Custom Lawn and Tree Maintenance Services which he continued to run until 2015. Heavy also partnered with his father helping him run the Hoffie Greenhouse in Gregory until his father's death in 1991. Heavy lived in Mount Vernon for a short time in 2000 before returning back to Gregory for the next 16 years. Jim was very well known and loved by everyone. He was known in Gregory and the surrounding area by the nickname "Heavy" for most of his life. His mother would tell the family the story that when Jim was a baby he was so tiny that his baby bed was actually a shoebox that he fit into. Then at the end of the story she would laugh and say, "And then I don't know what happened, he just grew and grew and earned the nickname "Heavy." Heavy had many interests and hobbies. He enjoyed playing golf with many friends and the children in the family. He made his own custom golf clubs and once considered opening his own golf course in Florida. His other passion was coaching and playing softball and had coached his niece Dana Hoffie for many years. Fishing, hunting, coin collecting, gun collecting, enjoying different coffees from all over the world, and playing on dart and bowling leagues were his other enjoyments. He taught Dana and Troy Hoffie the basics of bowling when they were very young. He shared his love of golfing and fishing with his great nephew Devin Hoffie. His love and enjoyment of playing pool was shared with his close friend Jay Wernke and his nephew-in-law William Brewer. Heavy also had a love for his many cats and shared many good years with his close companion Ginger, his Golden Lab. Heavy had an incredible devotion to his friends and family. He always had a friendly hello and a smile or friendly conversation for everyone he met no matter where he was or what he was doing. It came natural for him to be this way and passed it along to others. He was just truly a rare and wonderful person everyday of his life. He passed on knowledge, friendship, devotion, and the love of life to others. It did not matter if you knew Heavy for a minute in passing, a lifelong friend, or a family member, you always became his good friend and he became yours. He never had an unkind word towards or about anyone. Heavy was truly admired and loved by many. Gregory will never be the same for us without our Jim. He gave a whole new meaning to being humble and kind. Heavy is preceded in death by his parents Gerald and Louise Hoffie, brothers Jerry and Cal Hoffie, sister Nancy Lee Hoffie, and sister-in-law Nancy Hoffie. From Kotrba-Smith Funeral Home
