Jim was born November 17, 1945 in Ottumwa, IA and grew up on the family farm northwest of Hedrick in an area commonly known as "Crackersneck". The son of Floyd William and Bertha Tedrow Ferrell. Read More	Jim Ferrell James Edward Ferrell, of rural Hedrick, IA, passed away at 9 p.m. August 12, 2018 at the Keokuk County Health Center in Sigourney. Jim was born November 17, 1945 in Ottumwa, IA and grew up on the family farm northwest of Hedrick in an area commonly known as "Crackersneck". The son of Floyd William and Bertha Tedrow Ferrell. Jim married Janice Mae Wright on April 6, 1968 in Milan, IL. Jim graduated from the Fremont High School in 1964. He served in the 9th Army Infantry Division, Company C. 709th Maintenance Battalion from 1965-67. In 1966 he boarded the U.S. Naval ship, Upshur and docked in South Vietnam in the town of Vung Tau, later taking up base camp at Bearcat. During his time in the service Jim served as the company clerk, radio/communications operator and driver for the company commander. Jim was active in several organizations. He served for nearly 40 years on the Keokuk County Veterans Affairs Commission. He was a member and past commander of the Arendt-Bowlin-Stubbs American Legion Post #83. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #485 A.F. & A.M. of Hedrick and currently a member of the Justice Masonic Lodge #230 A.F.& A.M. in Ollie and also the Mahaska Masonic Lodge #644 A.F. & A.M. in Oskaloosa. Jim had also served on the Hedrick School Board. For over 20 years Jim was a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Oskaloosa. He also farmed with his wife, Janice, his entire life in rural Hedrick. Jim enjoyed the farm, coffee time and could invent, improve and fix almost anything. Jim is survived by his wife, Janice of Hedrick; three children, Jenell (Joel) Millikin of Hedrick, John (Sonja) Ferrell of Hedrick and Ronald Erwin of Waterloo; 10 grandchildren; a great-grandson; and his brother, Dennis W. (Joyce) Ferrell of Ottumwa. He is preceded in death by his parents and a son, Randall L. Erwin. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Hedrick-Martinsburg United Methodist Church with Rev. Tim Schoepf officiating. Burial will be in McCormick Cemetery with military services conducted by Arendt-Bowlin-Stubbs American Legion Post #83. Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday. A Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to Arendt-Bowlin-Stubbs American Legion Post #83 or to the Tri-County Veterans Memorial in Hedrick. Published on August 13, 2018
