There was a later report that one leg or foot was pinned under the car. Passerby finally extricated him; took him to a doctor’s office in Monterey, where he died. Mr. Simmons was employed at the Swiss Service Station in Monterey. It is reported that he was there Saturday night when the Beverage car drove up. He was asked to join the party for a brief drive west on Route 250. He accepted the invitation and was said to have taken the wheel. It is reported that the five turned around before reaching the top of the mountain, and were returning to the county seat when the accident happened within 15 or 20 minutes after they left Monterey. The Rev. A.E. Johnson was in charge, assisted by Rev. J.G. Long Jr. of the service for James Edward Simmons, born June 1, 1914, at the Monterey Methodist Church Monday morning at 10 o’clock. Mr Simmons died from third degree burns and shock at Dr. Chucker’s office approximately thirty minutes after the wreck. He was pinned under the front fender of the car against a wire fence. He was associated in business with W. Moffett Hull, for the last few years operating the Swiss Service Station in Monterey. Plans were underway for the moving of his house at Vanderpool to a recent purchased site in the Gutshall Addition, near the town. His humorous and personality will be greatly missed in the community. He is survived by his widow, Mrs Margie Halterman Simmons; two children Nelson and Peggy; his parents, Mr & Mrs Arthur Simmons of Vanderpool; one brother, Melvin; five sisters, Mrs. Walter Botkin, Doe Hill; Mrs. Hubert Moats, Mrs Albert Gum, Mrs Virgil Moats, and Miss Margie Simmons.
