Description	:	James Cordts, age 79, died at his home under hospice care on November 5, 2014. He was born in Willow Lake, SD, on March 28, 1935, to Otto and Helen (McVey) Cordts. He marrried Caroll Swenson at Watertown, SD on May 25, 1957.He is survived by his wife - Caroll of Madison. Two sons - Captain Bradley (Christine) of Germantown, TN and Robert of Madison. One daughter Jean Marie (Michael) Glanzer of Vancouver, WA. Three grandchildren Sam, Emily and Ruth. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers - Harold and Donald and one sister - Evelyn Parks.Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, November 7, 2014 at St Thomas Aquinas Church with Rev DeWayne Kayser officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.He grew up and attended grade school in Willow Lake. He graduated from Clark High School in 1953. He continued his education at Northern State College in Aberdeen where he played varsity basketball and football and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1957. He later went on to complete a Master's Degree in Education at South Dakota State University in 1971He taught and coached in Wessington, Howard, and Madison, SD, for a total of 42 years. In 1964 he coached the undefeated Howard Tigers to the State B Boys Tournament Championship for which he was named the South Dakota High School Coach of the year, an all sport, all classes honor. While at Howard, he coached three undefeated football seasons as varsity head coach. He also coached a Legion state baseball championship team for Howard.As head coach for track and field at Madison, he coached Madison to the 1982 Eastern South Dakota (ESD) Conference Meet championship. It was the first ESD team championship win for Madison in a major sport in 29 years before Madison left that conference. His 1982 boys team also finished third at the State AA Track and Field Meet, despite being one of the smallest schools in the division. For his 1982 accomplishments in track and field, he was named as the South Dakota High School Coaches Association Boys Track and Field Boys Coach of the Year. He went on to coach the Madison Bulldogs to the 1988 Boys Class A Track and Field Meet championship.He was also the head basketball coach at Madison for several years as well as the freshmen head football coach. He also served as a referee throughout the state in basketball and football for many years.During his summers in his working years as a teacher and for several summers after he retired from teaching Jim worked as a crop hail adjuster for several companies and as an independent adjuster throughout South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa.After retirement he was selected as a member of the South Dakota High School Coaches Hall of Fame, Madison High School Hall of Fame, South Dakota High School Basketball Hall of Shrine, and the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame. During his retirement years, his involvement in athletics continued as he coached as a volunteer assistant for several seasons at Madison High School, and Dakota State University as well as helping launch the South Dakota High School Basketball Hall of Fame while he served as Vice-President of that organization.There will be a parish scripture service at 7:00 PM on Thursday at Weiland Funeral Chapel which is in charge of the arrangements. - Weiland Funeral Chapel
