Lockwood Passed Away Sunday Was Esteemed Citizen Of Nottingham Township--Funeral On Tuesday James Edwin Lockwood, aged 78, years, one of the county's most highly esteemed citizens, for more than seventy years a resident of Nottingham township, passed away Sunday morning at 8 o'clock at his home, near the Air Line church. Death was due to apoplexy. Mr. Lockwood had been in declining health, but he appeared no worse than usual Saturday evening, and ate supper and retired to his bed at the customary time. It was about eleven o'clock that night that he was stricken with the fatal seizure, slowly sinking until death came at 8 o'clock the following morning. The decedent, James E. Lockwood, was a native of Champaign County, Ohio, where he was born April 12, 1842, a son of Alonzo and Eliza (Stanley) Lockwood. At his death he was aged 78 years, 8 months, and 13 days. He was only five years of age when his parents came to Wells County, locating in Nottingham township, and he spent the remaining 73 years of his life in that township. He engaged in farming as a life occupation, in which he was very successful. He also was the possessor of paying oil leases in the palmy days of the Wells County field. He was ever regarded as a man of sterling character in every respect and enjoyed the trust and full esteem of the community. He was honored by his fellow-citizens of his home township by election to the office of trustee, which office he filled with entire satisfaction. The marriage of Mr. Lockwood and Miss Frances O.[sic - Ann] Blacklidge, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Blacklidge, took place July 30, 1863, and they spent more than a half century of happy wedded life on the farm where he passed away. Mrs. Lockwood survives her husband, with the following children; James S., Joseph P., Arthur, and Charles C. Lockwood, and Mrs. Samuel Neher. One daughter, Maggie, died in 1913. Three brothers and a sister also survive, namely, George A. Lockwood, of Wells County; Alonzo Lockwood and Mrs. Angeline Clevenger, residing in Arkansas; and Charles Lockwood, of Montpelier. One brother, J. S. Lockwood, died in this city on October 4h last. Two brothers and three sisters are dead. Mr. Lockwood was a member of the Air Line M. E. church, which adjoins his farm on the west. He also was a member of the Petroleum lodge of Odd Fellows. Funeral services will be held at the Airline church at one o'clock Tuesday afternoon in charge of the pastor, Rev. Stewart.
