DENNING "How well he fell asleep, Like some proud river widening toward the sea, Calmly and gradually, silently and deep, Life joined eternity.: James Eli Denning was born June 19th, 1867, at Leando, Iowa and died at his home June 9th 1930, age 62 years, 11 months 21 days. He grew to manhood at the place of his birth and lived on an adjoining farm throughout his life, with the exception of two years spent in the west. He was married to Nellie E. Wirt, November, 16th, 1892. To this union was born Gretchen E. Besides his wife and daughter and son-in-law Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Chipps of Washington Iowa and grand son James Raymond, he leaves to mourn one brother and four sisters: George H. Denning and Mrs. Charles Shaffer of Douds, Iowa, Mrs. Ida Hellyer of Rock Island, Ill., Mrs. E.A. Nelson of Goodwell, Oklahoma, Mrs. Flora Rambo of Keosauqua, Iowa. During the time that Jim (as we always called him) was enjoying good health he ws always ready and most willing to render service to his neighbors in their hour of trouble and sorrow and was forgetful of self when ministering to others. A friend in the truest sense of the word. During the four years that he was president of the Farmers Union he was absent from only three meetings and was untiring in his efforts to make it a success. He was a most devoted husband, a kind and loving father. His only grandson, Jimmie Ray was the pride of his heart. Deceased was a man of energy, industry, and undisputed integrity. His untimely passing will be a sourse(sp) of regret to his many friends. (err: his many friends) "There is no death, what seems so is transition, They only go to rest as go the bird and bee, When the Dark River round them spread, They meekly bow their waiting heads. And lay them upon downy beds, They only got to rest." Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon June 11th from the home in charge of Rev. C.H. Chader who preached from the text, "Day Unto Day Uttereth Speech" Psalm 19: 2. The singers were Mr. and Mrs. O.E. Finney, Mrs. Mae McClure and Mr. Leslie Swires. The pall bears were Harry Carr, Gilmore Plowman, Homer Miller, James Sexton, Jess Jackson and Eliz Heckart. Those attending from abroad were Mr. John Bell of Valley Junction, Iowa, Mrs. Settie Doman of Rock Island, Ill., Mrs. E.A. Nelson of Goodwell, Oklahoma and cousins and friends from Eldon, Keosauqua and Troy. Interment was made in Leando cemetery. Handwritten: JAMES E. DENNING Source: Van Buren Co.
