Dies After Long Illness died 23 Nov 1952 James Elmer Garrison, 76. Died at His. Home in McCune Wednesday Night―Funeral was Held Saturday Afternoon with Burial in Friendship Cemetery. James Elmer Garrison, who had been in failing health since being-injured in an accident while mowing the state highway a year and a half ago, died at his home in McCune Wednesday night of last week at the age of 76 years, 5 months and 8 days. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Church of the Nazarene, in charge of the Shigley funeral service, and were conducted by Rev. Wm. Barnett, pastor of the church. Burial took place in the Friendship cemetery, south of McCune. Pall bearers were Bert Amos. Geo. Willson, Elmer Brintnall, Albert Hamblin, Floyd Mock and Melburn Herrick. Music was furnished by a quartet from the Pittsburg Church of the Nazarene as follows: Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Morgan, Rev. Ralph Simpson and Rev. Jas. Story, with Mrs. Simpson as accompanist. They sang, "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In the Sweet Bye and Bye." Mr. Garrison was born near Joplin, Mo. June 18, 1876, and when two years of age he moved with his parents to Allen county, Kansas, where he resided on a farm till early manhood. He attended the Emporia Normal school, after which he farmed and taught school in Allen county untill 1905, when he moved to the Friendship community, nine miles south of McCune. In 1909 he moved with his family to a farm eight and one-half miles northwest of McCune in Neosho county where he lived for 23 years. In 1932 he moved to a farm three miles north of McCune, where he resided until 1941, at which time he moved to McCune where he continued to reside. On March 26. 1902 he was united in marriage to Nettie Ross, and to this union one son, Chester was born. Mrs. Garrison died July 7, 1905. In 1909 he was united in marriage to Emma V. Nolan, who died January 25, 1935. To this union seven children were born, one of whom, Roy James, is deceased. On April 4, 1947, he was united in marriage to Mary Hester Lowman, who survives. Other survivors are four sons and three daughters as follows: Chester Alexander Garrison of Cincinnati, Ohio; George William Garrison of Chanute; Ernest Elmer Garrison of Pittsburg, and Glen Nolan Garrison of Oldsmar, Florida; Miss Lois Margaret Garrison of Neodesha; Mrs. Eunice Redburn of Parsons, and Mrs. Esther Smith of Bellflower, California. Step-children surviving are the following: Warren Lowman of Los Angeles, California; Mrs. Zina Mattox of Las Animas, Colo.; Mrs. Hester Pigg of Sunnyside, Washington; Lt. Zelvin Lowman of Washington, D. C., and Mrs. June Hornaday of Detroit, Mich. There are three brothers, Marion Garrison of Chanute, John Garrison of Hutchinson and Dennis Garrison of Pittsburg; two sisters, Mrs. Pearl Strawn of Pittsburg, and Mrs. Tabitha Cundiff of Barcley, Kansas. Also surviving1 are 22 grandchildren. Mr. Garrison was born in a Quaker family, and he entered Christian work as a layman early in life. When he moved to Neosho county he became a member of the Methodist church, and later when the Nazarene church was organized at Jacksonville in 1917, he became a charter member, and remained a faithful member of that church, which in 1928, was relocated in McCune. He was active in the work of the church which he loved until a short time before his death, and only ill health kept him away from the activities of his church. Mr. Garrison was a valued member of the local Church of the Nazarene and was therefore a valued citizen of the community. Few people show a deeper love and devotion to that which is right than did Mr. Garrison.
