He worked for the Parrott Produce Company and had completed his work for the day; had written a letter to Mrs. Shafer who was attending the womens convention in Des Moines, and stepped into the Cafe and ordered his supper, when without any warning or signs of distress or sickness, he fell over onto the counter, dead. It was evidently a case of heart trouble or apoplexy. The deceased came to Coon Rapids thirty two years ago and engaged in the creamery and poultry business, for a time being the only buyer of cream, eggs and poultry. A few years ago he gave up the business and accepted a position with the produce company at Manning, though keeping his residence in Coon Rapids where he continued to own residence property. He was a member of the school board several terms, also of the town council and also served one term as mayor, refusing to accept the nomination for a second term. He was public spirited and of active disposition. In politics he became an energetic progressive and was always ready for a contest in political affairs or discussions. He was positive and decided in his convictions to a degree and while always courteous was also unyielding. Everybody enjoyed his geniality, his ready humor and wit, and there is expression of universal regret and sorrow over his death. James Emmett Shafer was born November 15, 1855, in Columbiana Co, Ohio. Lived in Newcastle, Pennsylvania, until 1871, when he moved to Cambridge, Illinois. Later he settled at Cambridge, Iowa, where he lost his wife. One child was born to this union, Grace, who died few years ago in Pennsylvania. In 1888 the deceased came to Coon Rapids where he engaged in the creamery business. He was married to Miss Myrtle E. Aldrich of Coon Rapids, September 15 1890 to whom three children were born; Julia, who graduated from Grinnell College and who has for the past two years been teaching school in Wyoming, Dorothy, who died in young girlhood, and Virginia, who died in infancy. Beside ls the bereaved wife and daughter, Julia, there is left to mourn his death two sisters, Mrs. George Dowds, South Heights, Penn., and Mrs. Wm. McKee of Indiana, and three brothers, Wm l. Shafer, Pittsburgh, Penn., Frank Shafer, New Castle, Penn., and John Shafer, Baltimore, Maryland. The deceased was a member of the Presbyterian church and the Masonic fraternity and was by everyone highly esteemed. Rev. Allen, pastor of the Presbyterian church at Manning, conducted the funeral services in an impressive way. The floral tributes were many and beautiful.
