Read More	CONRAD - James Eugene Dabney, 96, died of natural causes on Sunday, Jan. 8, in Conrad. His funeral is at 10 a.m. Thursday at Pondera Funeral Home, followed by burial in Hillside Cemetery and a luncheon at the Moose Lodge in Conrad. Gene was born June 12, 1915, in Kirksville, Mo. He was born to Robert Alexander Dabney and Cora Tilton. Gene graduated from Kirksville during the years of the Great Depression. Jobs were scarce so he hopped on the rails and rode to Minneapolis, Minn. He had no money and just the clothes on his back. As he stood there in the railyard wondering what to do, an old man sitting there smoking a corncob pipe looked at Gene and asked, "Where ya going, son?" Gene responded, "I don't know." The old man took the pipe out of his mouth and said, "Son, see that train way over there? It is headed for Montana and if you hurry you can catch the train." Gene would tell the story that he sprinted across the tracks and caught the train and rode the rails to Montana. After arriving in Montana, Gene went to work for the Gurnsey Dell Dairy out of Great Falls. He later went to work for the Pioneer Dairy. Gene worked hard and saved his wages and bought the Quality Dairy in Conrad, Mont., in 1939. He grew tired of the dairy business and sold the Quality Dairy and bought his first ranch, called the Sober Up Ranch, out of Dupuyer. It was on this ranch he realized his passion for the land and animals and started a sheep business. Gene was an avid storyteller and his favorite stories to tell were of the sheep. He could spend hours telling stories about the sheep business, sheep shearing, herders, trailing sheep and he could tell many stories of the men who worked for him. Gene was kind and gentle and there wasn't a herder or hired man who didn't put his feet under Gene's kitchen table at Thanksgiving or Christmas and share in his spirit of kindness. After running sheep for 25 years, finding pasture and shearing crews became harder and harder so he sold the sheep and became strictly a cow man. He loved seeing all the sheep on the reservation; however, all the big sheep men went to cattle since they couldn't find pasture. Gene met and married Helen McMullen in 1939 and together they had six children. Helen and Gene divorced in 1951 and he married Jean Sheldon of Hulett, Wyo., in 1953. Together they ranched for many years before moving to Buffalo, Wyo. In 2001, they returned to Conrad. They were married 47 years. She preceded him in death in 2002. He was also preceded in death by grandsons, Tyler Erickson and Robert Michael Egan; and a granddaughter, Misty Dabney, preceded him in death. Gene is survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Gene would tell you that he lived a great life. He always wanted to live on the land and raise livestock and he was proud to have raised his children on the land. Farewell, Mr. Gene, friend, Dad and Grandpa.
