Downs Gloucester - James Evereson Downs, 68, of Gloucester, died Monday, April 8, 1996, at his son's home in Chesapeake. He was born in Haywood County, N.C., and was a Gloucester County resident for eight years. He was head lineman and had been in charge of new construction for the Norfolk office of Vepco, retiring in 1986 after 35 years of service. He was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Norfolk and was active in the Gloucester Senior Center with Meals on Wheels. He also attended Newington Baptist Church in Gloucester. He was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Warren J. and Kathy Downs of Chesapeake; two sisters, Francis Downs Clark of Newport News and Mabel Downs MeHaffey of Waynesville, N.C.; half-brother Albert Rhoades Downs of Clyde, N.C.; and grandchildren Matthew James Downs and Andrew McCain Downs of Chesapeake. A funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday at Newington Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael gray and Fred Brazwell. Burial in Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Andrews Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are by Andrews Funeral Home, Gloucester.
